Rams Split Run-Rule Results on Day Two of USD/UCSD Invite

Colorado State set to face UCSD for rematch Sunday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Colorado State secured a 10-2 victory in five innings over Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of day two at the USD/UCSD Invitational on Saturday. Colorado State's found themselves on opposite ends of the run rule in each game, falling to UC San Diego in game two of the day 1-9. 
 
Game 1: Colorado State, 10 | Fairleigh Dickinson, 2 
  • Colorado State secured a decisive victory against FDU with a final score of 10-2. In the first inning, the Rams took an early lead when Kyra Smith doubled to left field, driving in Lauren Stucky. The score was 1-0 after the first inning. The second inning saw CSU expand its lead as Bradie Poteet-Herrera's single up the middle brought home Lindsey Hinson, followed by Kyra Smith reaching on a fielder's choice, allowing Kaylynn English to score. The score stood at 3-0 after the second inning. 
  • The third inning was pivotal for the Rams as they added five runs to their tally. Kaylynn English hit an inside the park grand slam, scoring Autumn Rutherford, Allyson Moody, and Abby Edwards, bringing the score to 8-0 after the third inning. FDU responded in the fourth inning with two runs, thanks to a sacrifice fly and a single, but CSU maintained a strong lead with an 8-2 score after the fourth. 
  • In the fifth inning, the Rams sealed their victory with two more runs. Kyra Smith's RBI single and Rylee Gonzalez's RBI single contributed to the final score. CSU's defense was solid, holding FDU scoreless in the last inning and ending the game with a 10-2 win, securing a dominant performance. 
  • Giselle Bentley pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking two batters. Bentley faced 20 batters, recording six flyouts and five groundouts. Despite walking two batters, Bentley managed to keep the opponent from hitting any home runs, and she threw a total of 65 pitches with 36 strikes. The senior pitcher finished the game with a win, improving her season record to 1-2. 
  • Lauren Stucky posted a perfect day at the plate, going three-for-three with two doubles and scoring three times. Kyra Smith was effective with runners in scoring position, driving in four runs on two hits, including a double. Kaylynn English contributed significantly with a grand slam, finishing with four RBI and two runs scored. Rylee Gonzalez came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit single, adding one RBI to her tally.  
Game 2: Colorado State, 1 | UC San Diego, 9 
  • In the third inning, CSU managed to get on the scoreboard. Jac Smith walked and advanced to third on Lauren Stucky's hit by pitch and Jailey Wilson's single. Kyra Smith then reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Smith to tie the game. However, UC San Diego responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half, regaining the lead with runs scored on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. UC San Diego led 3-1 after the third inning. 
  • The fourth inning saw UC San Diego extend its lead with a five-run burst. A two-RBI double from Marley Espiau and an RBI single by Maalia Cherry highlighted the inning, pushing UC San Diego's advantage to 8-1.  
  • Colorado State's pitching staff faced challenges in their game against UC San Diego. Andrea Jaskowiak started the contest, pitching three and a third innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Olivia Schmidt entered in relief, conceding three earned runs on four hits without recording an out, facing five batters. Reagan Wick and Delaney Saugstad also appeared, with Wick allowing one hit in a third of an inning and Saugstad giving up one earned run and a walk in her third of an inning of work. The combined efforts of the pitchers struggled to contain UC San Diego's offense. 
  • Jailey Wilson posted two hits in three plate appearances, showcasing her consistency at the plate. Bradie Poteet-Herrera also contributed two hits, maintaining a perfect batting average in her two appearances. Despite her efforts, Saugstad allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk in her brief pitching stint.  
Up Next: The Rams will complete the weekend in day three of the USD/UCSD Invite on Sunday February 15, featuring a matchup against UC San Diego at 3 p.m. MT.
