Offense produces with new cast of contributors
Â
The other part of the score, however, is encouraging for Colorado State's veteran coach. It wasn't the normal cast of contributors, a group which has produced better than 35 points per game. No, this was the fourth different starting group for the offensive line. It was running back by committee, the veterans sidelined while younger players took over.
Â
Starters were missing. Points were not. There was a whole lot for Mora to like, starting with 207 rushing yards against a defense allowing less than 100 per game.
Â
"The way our offensive line moved people; our tight ends did a really nice job in the run game. Our receivers always do a good job in the run game, and then I thought that Ollie (Lundberg) started off by running really hard. I thought Meech (Malichi Graves) made some good runs. He really hasn't carried the ball much in college football at all. Neither of them really have a lot.
Â
"Ollie more than that but seeing Ced (Cedric Ross) do his thing in the open field was impressive. And then Damian (Moore) showing that power and some burst, which is what we've seen from him. And it was good to get Jayden (Fox) in there. You could certainly feel his speed when he went by you. So, you know, we pride ourselves on being able to run the ball, and regardless of who's up front blocking and who's running. I thought they did a really nice job of that tonight."
Â
Moore's first collegiate carry went for 27 yards, and Fox had an explosive run. So did quarterback Hauss Hejny. The Rams produced 12 explosive plays in the game, half of them coming from freshmen.
Â
Receiver Troy Foster came through late, his first catch turning a fourth-and-long into a first down, then coming back with another big catch. Hauss Hejny threw for 253 yards and two scores, adding 69 yards on the ground with another touchdown.
Â
He did it while being on the run a lot during the night, always looking down field. On one play, retreating backward, the let loose a pass which Maher hauled in for 31 yards, an unlikely third-down conversion.
Â
"Hauss is electric. I love Hauss. He's just one of a kind, I'll admit that," Maher said. "it was just backyard football. I was running off the seam and he's rolling out the complete opposite direction, just chucks one up and, you know, it just all worked out."
The season hasn't gone the way Mora has wanted; no body associated with the program envisioned being at this point after a 2-0 start to the year. The youngsters started the season behind veteran players, and Mora is impressed with the way they've continued to stay ready and earn chances.
Â
"Those guys have been around here for a while. I think most of them are here for spring, except for Jayden. Sometimes freshmen hit a wall around this time, but they have not," Mora said. "If they have hit it, I haven't seen it. They come out every day and they practice hard. And they work hard in meetings.
Â
"They work hard in the weight room. And they do the right thing. And they're getting good grades. That's the type of team, the type of players you want to build your team with, and we are building something. It's not been easy because we've struggled so much on defense."
Â
For a defensive coach like Mora, that's the hard part to take each week. Boise State, with a backup starting at quarterback, became the second team to score 60 or more against the Rams this season. The Broncos' 669 yards of total offense is the fifth most allowed in program history, and Boise State has produced three of those nights.
Â
Max Cutforth was unpressured most of the game, completing 16-of-19 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Dylan Riley, who was the nation's second-leading rusher entering the game, went for 192 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 86 yards on two catches, including a 73-yarder to open the scoring. Rasean Jones had six catches for 116 yards and a score.
Â
Boise State is a good offense, but Mora doesn't believe any team should open a game scoring four consecutive touchdowns, then close it with five more. Not one of the drives took five minutes off the clock.
Â
The opening streak stopped when on successive plays, Robby Harrison had tackles for loss, followed by an Oumar Diomande sack leading to the Broncos' lone punt.
Â
That's the stuff Harrison said they're working toward.
Â
"Stay together, you know. We're brothers. That's what we stand for since we got here," Harrison said. "There's no turning back, there's no way out, so, you've got to step in this building with us. If you're not with us, be free to go. That's really the overall message these next three weeks."
