CSU offense held to season-low total offense

LOGAN, Utah – With a win under the belt, the goal was to build.

Hit the road, add another victory and create a winning streak. Instead, nothing really clicked for Colorado State on Saturday afternoon. The defense continued to struggle, and the offense couldn't generate any rhythm as Utah State was consistent and persistent in a 31-14 victory at Maverik Stadium.

Coach Jim Mora's frustration reached  a boiling point. The pot started to boil before kickoff and spilled over with the ejection  of Jaivan Moore late.

"I'm ashamed of myself that a player got kicked out of the game on a team that I coach. That's happened once before in my 15 years as a head coach and it was at UConn and it was a guy on the bench," Mora said. "For that to happen today is embarrassing to me. It will absolutely not be tolerated in this program. The very first thing I told the players this week is we will not engage the crowd.

"The very first thing I saw when we took the field was two of our offensive players that are starters engaging the crowd. That's an indicator of why we played like crap on offense."

The Rams were limited to a season-low 263 yards of total offense and were shutout in the first half of the game after scoring 49 points as a unit the week prior. They lost a pair of fumbles and were just 4-of-11 converting on third down.

Colorado State didn't score until the Aggies had built a 24-0 lead, with running back Durell  Robinson scoring on a 6-yard run, his ninth rushing touchdown of the season (10th overall) and the sixth consecutive week he's found the end zone.

A late touchdown pass from Hauss Hejny to Cedric Ross covering 21 yards was just a late shot.

"That's just us not executing our plays," receiver RJ Vick said. "Our offense is like one of the best offenses in the country. So, there's no disconnect. Like I said, we've just got to execute our plays."

Colorado State was playing from behind the entire game to an offense which ranked last nationally in scoring. Utah State had five scoring drives of 70 yards or longer against the unit which ranks last in scoring defense.

McCae Hillstead started his second game at quarterback for Utah State and threw for 173  yards and a score, adding 79 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Utah  State rushed for 247 yards with a trio of Aggies finding the end zone.

Colorado State has now dropped nine consecutive road games and hasn't won in Logan since 2017.

Mora said everybody has a part to play in turning the program around, starting with him. His track record assures him he can do it, and he is familiar with the pathway, one some might find uncomfortable.

"I know how to turn programs around. I've done it four times," he said. "You've got to be freaking tough. You've got to be willing to make really hard decisions. As a university and as a program. So that needs to be demonstrated."

So, he'll be tough, and he said if people don't like it, they don't have to stay around.

There will be changes, not just in messaging but in who is on the field by demonstrating they are on board.

"It's confounding to me because I searched high and low. And it's worked a lot of places and it's worked really well,"  Mora said. "But it's everybody. It's the university, too. There are tough decisions. If you want to win you better make those decisions. Talk that over. And if you don't you are not going to win. Period."

The players are just as frustrated as their coach. As Mora spoke to the media, they could hear his message, sense his emotions.

They share them and agree changes have to come.

"We're kind of hard on ourselves. Anytime someone makes a bad play or anytime someone is doing something that's not to our standards, we try to get on them and be more vocal without worrying and telling them how to get things done," linebacker Oumar Diomande said. "I think that is what we're looking for going into next week."
