Colorado State dropped its Mountain West opener to a hot-shooting New Mexico team
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A barrage of threes to start the game helped New Mexico defeat Colorado State 88-69 in the teams' Mountain West opener on Wednesday night. The No. 22 Lobos made a season-high 15 threes in what proved to be the difference in the game compared to six makes from CSU.
How It Happened
- New Mexico's first half three-point barrage started when it scored 17 straight after CSU scored the first five points of the game to lead 17-5. The Lobos hit four threes during the run.
- A 16-4 run from UNM pushed its lead to 19 in the first half.
- CSU turned the ball over five times over the final 6:11 as New Mexico closed the half on an 11-2 run.
- The Lobos led 49-24 at the half thanks to making 11 threes during the first 20 minutes of play.
- Colorado State started the second half strong outscoring UNM 12-3 to cut the lead to 16, but that was the closest margin the rest of the game.
Game Notes
- John Tonje and Patrick Cartier tied for the lead with 16 points each for CSU. Tonje connected on 3-of-5 three pointers while Cartier was 7-for-8 from the field
- Kyle Evans scored a career-high seven points and had a career-best five rebounds.
- Isaiah Rivera also reached double-figures with 12 points and Isaiah Stevens added 10.
- Stevens recorded five-plus assists once again with seven on the night.
- CSU outscored New Mexico in the paint 36-22.
