CSU football team continues to bring national recognition to program

WACO, Texas -- The outstanding performance of the 2014 Colorado State football team continues to bring national recognition to the program. For its 10-2 record in the regular season, behind a record-breaking offense and six All-Mountain West players, the program's former head coach, Jim McElwain, was named Coach of the Year for Region 5 by the American Football Coaches Association.
The AFCA's Region 5 consists of the Mountain West and Pac-12 Conferences, plus BYU. It is the first AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honor for a Colorado State head coach. McElwain on Thursday, Dec. 4 was hired as the new head coach at Florida.
The Rams, under offensive coordinator and now interim head coach Dave Baldwin, are on pace to break the school record for offensive yards per game (497.8), passing yards (3,915) and third-down conversion rate (51.2%). Defensively, under co-coordinators Marty English and Al Simmons, the Rams held opponents to their lowest points-per-game output (23.4) by a CSU team since 2006 to help spur the 10-2 record that included a nine-game winning streak, the program's longest since 1997-98.
McElwain fashioned a record of 22-16 in his three seasons at Colorado State, and the 10 wins in the regular season is a feat that has been accomplished just three times previously at Colorado State.
The Rams on Sunday accepted an invitation to play in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl vs. Utah on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. MT on ABC.
