Colorado State University's football team is headed to its ninth bowl in the past 11 seasons and will play Navy in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The game is scheduled Dec. 22 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, and kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. MT.
Bowl committee chairman Doug Sawyer contacted Director of Athletics Mark Driscoll and football coach Sonny Lubick Tuesday morning with an official invitation to play in the first-ever Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, Calif., against the Navy Midshipmen.
"We could not be happier with this match-up," Sawyer said. "We are excited that Colorado Sate and Navy are going to help us launch the first ever San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. We look forward to welcoming these two fine football teams and their fans to San Diego next month."
Lubick said he was excited about returning to San Diego for a bowl game. "I am just so excited for our players, especially the seniors," said Lubick following the announcement. "They have worked so hard and meant so much to this program. This is a great reward for all that they have done for the program."
Colorado State, 6-5 overall and 5-3 (tie, second) in the Mountain West Conference, earned its ninth bowl invite in Lubick's 13 seasons, and the 11th in school history by virtue of a 31-27 win over UNLV to close the regular season.
Driscoll said athletic department and university administrators have already begun the initial planning process for the bowl game.
"Accepting an invitation to a bowl game is a great honor for our entire institution and the community," Driscoll said. "It offers us an opportunity to showcase our football program, the athletic program, and our entire university on a national stage. A bowl game is truly a campus-wide event."
Driscoll said plans are in place to begin accepting ticket orders Wednesday, Nov. 23, by phone (1-800-491-RAMS), or online at CSURAMS.com. Tickets are $35 each.
"One of our immediate priorities is selling as many tickets as possible to our fans for the game. We want to emphasize how important it is for fans to purchase tickets through our ticket office in order to assist us in reaching our ticket goal for the game."
Colorado State is no stranger to San Diego bowl games. The Rams have visited San Diego three times to play in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. They were defeated by Michigan in 1994 (24-14) and Kansas State in 1995 (54-21). They beat Missouri in 1997 (35-24).
This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
