Kramer posts double-double in first start

As the lights opened on Moby Arena for the first time this season, the fans waited eagerly to see what this new team had to bring.

Defeating Lindenwood 63-46 in its home opener, CSU showed what new -- and old -- it had to offer.

CSU's victory was partly led by junior Caitlin Kramer, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in her first college start.

After spending much of the previous season with limited court opportunities, Kramer entered this season in a starting role. Her performance Monday marked an early look into how she would contribute to a team finding its new identity.

"Last year was a good learning opportunity for me, watching the girls in front of me and above me," Kramer said. "I think I learned a lot from that. In the off-season, I feel like I was able to carry that over and what I learned and get stronger."

The Rams opened the game slowly offensively, taking a narrow 10-8 lead after the first quarter. CSU struggled to find its rhythm, missing all but one of its early 3-point attempts while shooting just 28.6%.

Lindenwood kept in the game, making two shots from beyond the arc to take six of its eight points.

With both teams facing off for the first time, the Lions continued to find success from the 3-point line in the second quarter. Lindenwood's consistent shooting from deep accounted for 18 of its 22 first-half points.

While Lindenwood found its rhythm from deep, Kramer became CSU's answer outside the paint. She made three of her four 3-point attempts in the first half, accounting for all nine of the Rams' first-half points beyond the arc.

As the second quarter progressed, CSU began to find more offensive consistency, shooting 46.7% in the period and taking a 26-22 lead into halftime.

Lindenwood's early performance challenged the Rams, but CSU slowly adjusted to the Lions' strengths and found consistency.

"I thought Lindenwood really, really battled and competed. I mean, they put us on our heels early, and it took us a while to kind of get some traction tonight. I thought from the latter third of the second quarter to the third and fourth, we just started to find some footing and were obviously good enough," coach Ryun Williams said. "We've got a lot of things to get better at. That game surely exposed it but that's why you have these early games. And I thought our kids did a good job."
The adjustments became more noticeable after half. With only a four-point lead entering the third quarter, the Rams began to create more opportunities off Lindenwood turnovers while limiting the Lions' success from 3-point range.

CSU also used its size and ability to draw fouls and create additional scoring opportunities.

Rather than relying on one offensive option, the Rams began to spread the scoring around. Kloe Froebe helped create opportunities in the paint, while Kramer continued to provide an outside threat.

"We shot the ball really well, that was definitely an advantage for us. Then Kloe got in the paint and started drawing fouls more often, so I just think that versatile playing is hard to guard," Kramer said.

CSU's second-half performance helped turn a close first half into a greater finish. The Rams continued to build their lead through the third and fourth quarters, eventually securing the 17-point victory.

"I thought for the most part, we did a good job making some adjustments. I thought once we kind of got a handle of their personnel, I thought it was difficult for them to score," Williams said. "Everything that we did wrong, it did get exposed. They picked on us inside a little bit, we gave them a lot of angles. We don't do that, but it's an opener. We played worse openers, for sure. It's a good one to have under our belt because there's a lot of good stuff we can take off of that film and get better from."

The Rams continued their lead in the second half, creating opportunities through Lindenwood turnovers. Through adjustments and subs, CSU began to limit the Lions domination of the 3-point line.

In this, Kramer shined and showed how the work put in during the offseason and practice could be translated into a game scenario.

"Kramer's arguably been our best all-around player in practice. I mean, she's got incredible length. She shot it extremely well. She moves and cuts really well. I thought she got tired tonight, we were pretty short with that pitch tonight. We're trying to play this group into some experience," Williams said. "There is a lot of newness out there. I thought Kramer, if anybody was going to kind of be a little bit anxious and have a little bit of first-game jitters, I thought it would have been Kramer. (McKenna) Murphy's been on the floor a lot, Kloe, (Camryn) Runner has played a lot of minutes. It was Kramer that was our calm, I felt like, so I'm proud of her."

The Rams entered Monday's home opener coming off a Mountain West Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. However, with only one returning starter, CSU had to find team chemistry and consistency.

Coming to CSU as a freshman, Froebe has helped provide experience for the new group. With multiple years under William's coaching, she has familiarity in collegiate play that can help the newcomers.

"Being able to play since my freshman year under coach and just knowing his system is helpful for the transfers," Froebe said. "It's great to be able to help them, tell them what coach expects, what he wants, and just know what the standard is."

That familiarity has also allowed returning players to help new teammates adjust to the expectations of a student-athlete. With a different roster and new combinations on the floor, the Rams are still working to establish the chemistry that helped define last season's team.

This being their first time facing off, it gave the Rams a taste of what playing in a new conference could feel like.

With Monday's first victory secured, the Rams continue to develop the new lineup as the season progresses. In addition, Kramer's performance provided an early sign of the contributions the Rams can expect from players stepping into larger roles this season.
