CSU shows off strength of new roster

With the goal of getting a taste for new competition and an itch to see a glimpse of Moby Madness, Colorado State took the court.

Hitting 3 after 3, the Rams women dominated in their Wednesday exhibition game against Chadron State College, 109-38.

CSU came off of a strong previous season, winning the Mountain West conference tournament  and playing in March Madness for the first time since 2016.

Now entering the 26-27 season, the Rams find themselves with seven returners and only one consistent starter. Junior Kloe Frobe was one of three players to start in all 35 games the past season, averaging 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

"I've been fortunate to play on some great teams here at Colorado State and have some great teammates. I think this year, a key is we have scorers in every single position, and they can score at all three levels – I think that's huge," Froebe said. "We've got bigs who can shoot it, we've got guards who drive it, shoot it. It's really great to have that."

The first half saw the most action from CSU with 59 points and a 62.3 field goal percentage. A great first half also came from fresh transfer, Camryn Runner, who finished in double digits, scoring 16 of her game-best 21 in the first two quarters.

Runner came to CSU from Evansville after receiving All-MVC second team and MVC All-Tournament team  honors and setting the single-season program record in points, assists and free throws.

"I'm not facing as much pressure when I'm on offense, they're not pressuring me as much as where I came from. I've got shooters around me, I've got weapons around me," Runner said. "It's so nice knowing where my teammates will be on the court -- like hey I'm getting doubled, boom, open 3, just knowing and trusting that in my teammates, which is one thing that is amazing here. Shout out to my teammates because they make my life easier."

Runner brings new eyes to this Ram team and a proven scoring presence. Her addition is just a part of a larger transition for CSU.

While trying to find the right combination of new players to recreate last year's success, the exhibition game gave the Rams an early opportunity to see how work in practice can translate onto the court.

"Just in practicing the little things like warm-ups, what we do then, what we do during time-outs. Practicing all those things when you have a new group of teammates that not everybody is used to," Froebe said. "It's been great to be able to do that and to play other people besides each other. We've been playing each other for five months now, so it's great to see some different defenders."

The Rams offense proved a point in the game, but their defensive performance offered another view of what this new roster could become. CSU held Chadron State to only 38 points, including just 12 in the second half, showing its ability to limit an opponent's scoring opportunities. Despite the 71-point victory, CSU's play had its flaws. Finding offense rhythm early, the Rams' rebounding remained an area of concern, allowing Chadron 25 total rebounds.

"I think some strengths were our shooting and our ability to move the ball. I especially handled the pressure, which was really key. They're a great defensive team, and they were really aggressive. It was great to see us have minimal turnovers," Froebe said. "Then to work on, definitely rebounding. We gave up a lot of offensive boards, so that's something that we're going to need to improve on moving forward."

Chadron struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities, going nearly five minutes in the third quarter without a point. While CSU continued to lead and went on multiple scoring runs. For the Rams, there is still much to be learned and especially finding an identity, however the defensive effort provided an example of how CSU hopes to control the game.

"I think we pride ourselves in guarding. We pride ourselves in game-plan defense. Our kids did a really good job of that tonight," coach Ryun Williams said. "Defensively from scrimmage one, to two, to tonight's exhibition, we've progressively gotten better. We're nowhere near good enough, we've still got a long way to go, but they're very intentional about what they need to get better at, and they're really trying."

Despite the lopsided score, the Rams know there is still work to be done before regular season play. With 16 made 3-pointers and five players scoring double digits, they demonstrated the depth of their offense as well as growth in the area.

With many new players adjusting to their roles, CSU's focus is to turn individual strengths into team cohesiveness and create a new Ram identity.

"Each game we've wanted to get better. We've wanted to grow in certain areas. I thought tonight we did a really good job for the most part with our ball security, we wanted that to be a huge emphasis," Williams said. "We wanted to play with poise under situations where you could get rattled and our kids did a good job of that. I wanted our kids to really grow their confidence. Whatever they're really good at, do it, and do it with some freedom. I think you saw our kids freed up tonight and, you know, shooting the ball really well."

With the opportunity to get everyone on the court, the exhibition gave Williams a chance to rotate players and evaluate their strengths to see which combinations worked together. Returning players will be important as the Rams blend their experience with the talent of newcomers.

Wednesday's win gave CSU an early glimpse of its potential, but it is only the beginning of the road.

"It's just an exhibition. I thought Chadron played really tenacious, played really hard; they were very disruptive. This was a good game for us -- it wasn't going to be all that rhythmic and free-flowing. You had to make some basketball plays tonight," Williams said. "I thought our kids did a tremendous job of that. You know, four first-half turnovers was exceptional. We got everybody, you know, quality minutes tonight. Everybody got under the floor, they got under the lights. They got that anxiousness out of them, because now, now we go for real."

With the exhibition behind them, the Rams now turn toward a regular season that will test how far their new roster can go.

The championship goal remains, but this team will have to create its own path to reaching it.
