Rams Come Up Short in Triple Overtime at Northern Colorado

11/29/2022 9:42:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Colorado State trailed nearly all game against the Bears, tying the game with 1:40 left in regulation

GREELEY, Colo. – Playing its third game in five days, Colorado State knew it was going to be a tough game against rival Northern Colorado. The Rams trailed nearly all game against the Bears, as many as 11, but fought back to tie the game with 1:40 left in regulation. CSU (4-3) had opportunities during each overtime period, but fell in triple OT, 102-91 on Tuesday night in the Bank of Colorado Arena.

Colorado State was cold from behind the arc, coming into Tuesday's game leading the country in 3-point percentage with 47 percent, but finished the night hitting 7-of-30, including 4-of-19 through the first three frames. Meanwhile, Northern Colorado couldn't miss from downtown, hitting 15-of-28 for 54 percent – the Bears entered the game shooting under 40 percent from three.

Northern Colorado started the game on a 7-0 run to grab an lead early – one they wouldn't lose for some time, while building an 11-point advantage with 4:36 left in the first quarter.

Both teams traded baskets, as the Rams kept their deficit under double-figures going into halftime despite shooting just 2-of-13 from 3-point range. Colorado State made use of Northern Colorado's 2-3 zone, scoring over half its points in the paint with 22. Sydney Mech reached double-digits with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to lead the CSU.

Colorado State continued to battle in the third quarter, cutting the Bears' lead to three following another three from Mech at 48-45. UNC responded with a 7-2 run, which included a pair of threes, to stifle any run by the Rams.

In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Northern Colorado again built an 11-point advantage with 8:59 left to play. Colorado State got a few stops on the defensive side of the court, while putting together a 11-2 run to grab its first lead of the game with 2:33 left to play at 68-67. UNC hit a 3-pointer with 1:17 left to take the lead, before Meghan Boyd was fouled on a three with 15 seconds left to make the basket the long way at the charity stripe and to tie the game at 72-72 at the end of regulation.

CSU improved a little bit from behind the arc in the second half, hitting 4-of-10 attempts, while UNC continued a hot hand hitting 5-of-10.

In each of the first two overtimes periods, it came down to a final basket. Northern Colorado had the chance in the first OT, missing a 3-pointer after the Rams turned the ball over with nine second left to play. In the second period, the Rams' defense forced a shot clock violation to get the ball with 13 second left, missing a jumper as time expired.

In the final five minutes of overtime, Colorado State scored first, but then Northern Colorado sank back-to-back-to-back threes to take the lead. The Rams' offense went scoreless in their three possessions as the Bears extended their lead to seven with 1:39 left to play. CSU scored a layup but with just over a minute to play to get back within range at five, but again, couldn't capitalize on offensive possessions down the stretch.

McKenna Hofschild led Colorado State with 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting and dished out seven assists. Sydney Mech finished with 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting and had five blocks. Meghan Boyd added 16 on 4-of-11 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cailyn Crocker and Joseana Vaz also reached double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectfully. Vaz recorded her first double-double of her career in the Green and Gold, pulling down 12 rebounds – seven on offense.

The Rams finished shooting 23 percent (7-of-30) from behind the arc, and 41 percent (34-of-83) from the floor. CSU finished making 15-of-20 free-throws and over half its points came from inside the paint with 52.

Colorado State will have a few days to regroup before starting a five-game homestand, beginning on Saturday hosting Western Michigan at noon.
