Rams Overcome Shooting Woes to Beat Highlanders, 52-40

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – You miss every shot you don't take. Sunday afternoon at Moby Arena, the women's basketball teams from Colorado State and California Riverside were in pushing the idea of every shot they took.
It wasn't that bad, it just felt like it at times in the Rams' 52-40 victory over the Highlanders. CSU (5-3) shot just 28 percent overall in the game and had long spells without production. UCR finished at just 24.6 percent, making just one of 14 attempts from the floor in the second.
That's how a team survives an off-shooting night, by playing defense. CSU head coach Ryun Williams felt his team bottled up its guests and left them without any good options.
"You're going to go through some stretches like that, especially when you get into league," Williams said. "Now that we have league right around the corner here, and teams know each other so well and they take things away, you're going to go through some droughts. Maybe not an 8-minute drought, or whatever it was, but you still have to play through it. The thing that impressed me the most was the way these kids kept defending and rebounding."
The Rams did it by moving on from the shots they took and missed, and went down court and played defense. It's happened in the past, and they know it will happen again.
"You've just got to keep shooting. You've got to believe in the work you've put in all offseason and just go back to your fundamentals," CSU guard Jamie Bonnarens said. "Even when your legs are tired and you're probably rushing your shot like I was going a lot, it's always good to hear your coaches and teammates saying, 'just slow down, slow your shot down,' and they'll go in."
Colorado State started to find some success after the break, scoring 18 points in the third quarter, but the Rams also allowed UCR to remain in the game, giving up 15. Bonnarens found a way to make an impact when she wasn't behind the arc, finding lanes to drive and seeing open teammates for baskets.
Eventually her stroke came back at a key time. The Rams led 40-32 with less than five minutes on the clock when she stroked a pair of 3-pointers on successive shots, and when Megan Jacobs found the net, the Rams had pushed out to a comfortable advantage finally.
Bonnarens was the only Ram in double figures, scoring 15. Jacobs and Makenzie Ellis both finished with nine.
The frustrations never really ended, but they didn't extend to playing defense or cleaning up the misses. Brady pulled down 11 rebounds and helped the Rams hold a 20-6 scoring advantage in the paint.
"It's just to recognize what you can control and what you can't," Brady said. "We were getting good shots, and they're going to fall eventually, so just keep locking it down on defense and rebounding, keep pushing because it's going to fall.
"I think we do a good team effort just reminding each other. It's easy when you have somebody reminding you … people just keeping each other in check."
The nights Williams referenced are right around the corner as CSU opens Mountain West play with a road game at San Diego State on Wednesday, followed by a home matchup with Boise State on Sunday. You know, the teams that know you so well and can take things away.
For a team learning a new flow, a precursor type of game wasn't all that bad to see.
"We're still growing as a basketball team. I mean, every game I think we learn something new about this group," Williams said. "A lot of it is extremely positive, but with this unusual Mountain West schedule where we're playing two games here before Christmas break, we're ready to go. We have to be.
"We've been in some close games. Usually those games are very highly contested and close games. Our kids have been in those, so they've been tested. I think they understand how important every possession is, and that's going to be crucial going to San Diego State."
Not only on offense, but those on defense.
