CSU Drops Conference Opener at SDSU, 59-49

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The early Mountain West opener did not go in Colorado State's favor as the Rams lost 59-49 to San Diego State Wednesday evening at Viejas Arena.
Despite an early deficit, the Rams worked it to a two-score game in the fourth but were unable to capitalize down the stretch. Colorado State falls to 5-4 overall and picks up its first loss in conference play. San Diego State halted its three-game losing streak to improve to 4-5 overall and start conference play with a win.
"Just obviously not ready to go," Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams said. "We have to do a better job as coaches getting these players ready. That start was absolutely the difference in the game. I mean a 28-point first quarter. Everything that we wanted to take away that we talk about, we gave them. We were looking for leadership all night long, but unfortunately, she [starting guard Tori Williams injured] is back home, but it is what it is. You still must have performances and we didn't have that whether it was at the foul line or shooting the three. There were opportunities but we didn't get them, which is why it is such a mental and physical game."
Two Rams finished with double digits in Megan Jacobs with a dozen and Andrea Brady with 10 points, while Brady's six rebounds led the team. As a team, the Aztecs marginally shot better at 35.3 percent to CSU's 30.6 percent. SDSU did connect on two more threes than CSU and outrebounded the Rams 40-31.
At the half, the Rams trailed the Aztecs 32-24 after two almost opposite quarters. Redshirt-junior Liah Davis led CSU in scoring with eight, while SDSU's Tea Adams did the same on the other side. The Aztecs enjoyed a 41.4 percent shooting clip in the first half compared to CSU's 28.6 percent from the floor.
In the first quarter, the Aztecs put the Rams into an 11-0 hole before a pair of CSU free throws stopped the skid. The narrative stayed the same in the first frame as SDSU drained their fourth three at the buzzer for the 28-12 lead. Aside from two Davis layups, the other eight Ram points came from the charity strike.
The script was flipped in the second as the Rams scored 10 straight and held SDSU scoreless until the 3:48 mark. However, another dry spell shooting (0-for-5) prevented the Rams from completely swaying the momentum back. It was a six-point margin until the Aztecs hit another buzzer beater albeit this time a two.
The second half started promising with a Katia Stamatelopoulos steal and fastbreak layup, however little ground was made with CSU outscoring SDSU 12-11. The Rams pulled with five points but again the Aztecs scored right before the buzzer to stamp momentum.
Megan Jacobs sank a three in the first 20 seconds of the fourth to pull within four, but five scoreless minutes followed for the Rams. Luckily, the Aztecs didn't fare much better and the game was at a seven-point margin after Jacobs hit a free throw following the media timeout. Two Jamie Bonnarens free throws brought it to a five-point game with 3:37 left, but a 6-0 SDSU run put the Aztecs past the double-digit lead again, which wasn't relinquished.
Next, the Rams continue conference play at home in Moby Arena against Boise State on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tip.
