Men Finish 18th, Women Place 15th

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A tough field and a fast course presented a challenge for the Colorado State cross country teams with the men's team taking 18th and the women 15th Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane Invitational.

In total there were 23 nationally ranked teams in action, representing the marquee cross country race of the weekend. The weather at the Burke Golf Course hovered around 50 degrees with partly sunny skies for the 5,000-meter women's race and the 8K men's race that followed.

Despite finishing in the lower half of the field in the Blue Race, the No. 13-ranked men's squad recorded two personal bests and for three of the runners it was their first collegiate 8K. Another three Rams recorded career-best times in the Open Race.

Like the season opener, redshirt-sophomore Forrest Barton was the lead Ram in 51st place at Twenty-four minutes and 14.7 seconds – a new career-best time.

After Barton, Satchel Caldwell, a redshirt-senior, and Jacob Brueckman, a redshirt-junior, crossed at 79th and 90th, respectively. In his first collegiate cross country outing, redshirt-freshman Mason Brown went fourth for CSU at 126th overall, while redshirt-sophomore Maximilliano Martinez was on his heels in 128th with a personal best of 25:07.22.

Rounding out the scoring was Brock Dykema and Thomas Chaston with Tom Oates also in tow – all registering their first collegiate 8Ks.

The women's race featured 11 top-30 nationally-ranked teams among the 24-team field. All eight runners for the Rams registered new career-bests in the Blue Race 5K. An additional two runners had PR's in the Open Race as well. The women finished above No. 16 Iowa State.

For the second time this season, redshirt-sophomore Lily Tomasula-Martin was the first to cross for Colorado State with sophomore Ivy Gonzales being the next scorer. Tomasula-Martin came in 50th place at 17:05.29 and Gonzales in 82nd place at 17:27.67.

Redshirt-Sophomore Sarah Carter and freshman Ashlyn Hillyard followed Gonzales closely, finishing in 87th, and 91st place, respectively. Rounding ou the scoring was Devon Peterson (112th). The remaining Ram finishers were redshirt-freshman Claudia Burgess, redshirt-senior Emma Atwell and sophomore Hailey Leader.

The Rams are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 12, in the UCCS Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
