Rams fall in Mountain West opener at New Mexico, 3-0

9/21/2018 10:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Rams return to action Sunday for this season’s Orange Out match vs. San Diego State at Noon MT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the New Mexico Lobos, 3-0, in the Rams' 2018 Mountain West opener on Friday from the UNM Soccer Complex.

Despite some early pressure from Colorado State (3-4-2, 0-1-0 MW), New Mexico seized the lead in the match with a tally within the first nine minutes. Starting at the 8:29 mark, UNM (5-3-0, 1-0-0 MW) generated a pair of chances from within the penalty area on back-to-back corner kicks. The latter of those found the back of the net, as UNM's Cami Floth finished from within 18 to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead.

Among Colorado State's top scoring opportunities of the match came minutes before the Lobos' first goal on Friday. In the second minute of play, the Rams drove the ball down the right side of the pitch, and played it into the box to Caeley Lordemann. The junior nearly missed putting the Rams on the board at the 1:19 mark, firing just high of the goal.

CSU held UNM off the board for the remainder of the first half, but the Lobos tallied two more goals within the first 15 minutes of the second half. On a free kick opportunity in the 57th minute, the ball was played into the box, where it pinballed around until it reached the foot of Jennifer Munoz. Controlling the ball from just outside of the goal area, Munoz flipped it to Alesia Garcia on the other side of the box, where Garcia headed it to the top-right corner of the goal. Less than three minutes later, Munoz received the ball in the penalty area in a similar situation, and fired from the right side of the goal area to the top-left corner of the net to make it 3-0.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We had seen the long throw in an earlier match this season, and just did not do a good enough job of defending that set play all night. It was a tough way to start, but it's only the first match of conference play, and this will not be who we are on Sunday."

NOTES
  • Junior midfielder Caeley Lordemann and senior midfielder Makenzi Taylor paced Colorado State in shots against the Lobos with three apiece on Friday.
  • No player saw the field for all 90 minutes for CSU on Friday. Lordemann and junior defender Halley Havlicek led the team with 81 minutes played each.
