Quick Aztec Answer Sinks Rams in San Diego

Five-minute swing erases second-half lead
For 56 minutes, the plan was working.
Colorado State spent the first half absorbing nearly everything San Diego State could send forward: eight shots, five corner kicks and two extended stretches of pressure. None of it produced a goal. Then Avery Boulom stepped to the penalty spot early in the second half and gave the Rams something to protect.
They protected it for a little more than five minutes. Victoria Miller scored three times in a five-minute span, sending the Aztecs to a 3-1 victory in Pac-12 play Sunday and undoing an hour of disciplined work from a team that had earned its lead the hard way.
The opening 45 minutes belonged to the back line and to Addison Huber. After the Aztecs opened with a pair of corner kicks, the sophomore goalkeeper turned away Alexyz Nakamoto in the eighth minute. CSU then survived a sequence of three corners and three shots between the 17th and 21st minutes. San Diego State made one more run before the break, firing four shots in five minutes, and Huber denied Alannah Gonzales in the 42nd to send the teams to the locker room level.
That part has become habit. Through four Pac-12 matches, the Rams have yet to allow a first-half goal.
They came out of the break looking for more than a draw. An early corner kick and an Ava Wallhead shot set the tone, and after Huber stopped Nakamoto a second time, Boulom converted from the spot in the 57th minute. It was the senior's first goal of the season, on just her second shot, and it came on the Rams' first penalty kick of the year. No one has logged more time waiting for the chance: Boulom is the only Ram to play all 1,260 minutes this fall.
The response was swift. Miller equalized in the 62nd minute off assists from Cayden Chowana-Bandhu and Alexis Leath, buried a penalty kick of her own two minutes later, then finished a Karoline Lundstrom feed in the 67th to complete the hat trick.
CSU did not go quietly. All seven of the Rams' shots came after halftime, four of them on goal, and three arrived in a late push between the 79th and 86th minutes. Kailey Carlen made saves on Shadia Valenzuela and Breckyn Ferrell to keep the margin where it was. The closing stretch grew physical, and by the final whistle San Diego State had been called for 17 fouls to CSU's five.
Huber finished with five saves, her fourth consecutive match with at least that many. She has 28 in four conference matches.
CSU is 3-9-2 overall and 2-2-0 in Pac-12 play. San Diego State improves to 8-3-2 and 2-1-1.
