FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team came away with a draw battling the San Diego State Aztecs to a scoreless deadlock on Sunday from the CSU Soccer Field.
Colorado State redshirt junior goalkeeper Hunter Peifer made four saves on Sunday. She denied the Aztecs once in the first half, but that stop was not as impactful as her saves in the remainder of the match. In the 88th minute, a CSU foul allowed SDSU's Malia Kaleiohi to dribble into the box, but she was stopped by the Rams' keeper on a crucial save late in regulation.
Offensively, CSU's best chance came in the in the 109th minute, as sophomore forward Taylor Steinke drove into close range on SDSU keeper Gabby English. Steinke, dribbling in, fired from close range, but English made a reflex save to snuff out the Rams' scoring opportunity. Senior forward Kaija Ornes also generated a handful of chances for CSU, pacing the Rams in shots (three) and shots on goal (one).
On the day, there were seven total shots on goal between the two teams, but none found the back of the net, and the scoreless gridlock stood, 0-0.
QUOTES
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"There is a lot of things in sports that usually revolve around the scoring piece. We as a staff need to spend a bit more time with those kids on finding the goal. Instead of shooting the ball, we need to score the ball. We need to score the ball, and that sometimes requires a technique that can get it outside the goalkeeper's hands. We are creating enough chances, it's just getting to that final piece."
Senior forward Kaija Ornes on the difference between this game and last game…
"I think people were switched on and a lot more focused and driven. Everything we did had a purpose and we were able to find people."
STAT OF THE MATCH
Sunday's match marked the first time that Colorado State has earned a favorable result against San Diego State. The Aztecs had won all five of the previous meetings between the two schools.
NOTES
