Mounsey’s three-point shooting not enough as Rams fall at BYU, 51-42

12/15/2018 4:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Mollie Mounsey sinks seven threes, the fifth-most in a single game in program history

PROVO, Utah – Junior guard Mollie Mounsey scored 21 points on seven three-point field goals for the Colorado State women's basketball team at BYU on Saturday, but it proved not enough as the Rams fell to the Cougars, 51-42, from the Marriott Center.

Mounsey made her seven triples on 15 attempts (46.7 percent), and led Colorado State (4-5) in rebounding with eight. Freshman guard Lauren Brocke was the Rams' top secondary scorer with nine points on 3-for-8 (37.5 percent) three-point shooting. However, the remainder of the team combined to shoot 6-for-31 (19.4 percent) as well as 6-for-24 (25 percent) on two-point field goal attempts. Overall, 10 of the Rams' 16 field goals made on Saturday were from beyond the three-point arc.

After a back-and-forth opening quarter, BYU (7-3) took the lead to open the second quarter and held it until halftime. However, BYU only had two points of separation at 20-18, and CSU took the lead back on a Mounsey three in the opening minute of the second half. BYU led for most of the third quarter and took a 33-30 lead to the fourth quarter, although the Rams battled to tie the game twice more.

Although CSU had pulled within three points of BYU, the final deciding stretch of Saturday's game was the opening portion of the fourth quarter, when the Cougars used a 10-2 run to open up a 43-32 advantage. The Rams cut the deficit to eight twice down the stretch – both times on threes from Brocke and Mounsey – but were unable to claw back any closer before the final 51-42 result.

STAT OF THE GAME
Junior guard Mollie Mounsey made seven threes against BYU, the fifth-most in a single game in program history (dating back to 1988). Becky Hammon (twice), Sara Hunter and Kim Mestdagh each are tied for the single-game CSU record with respective performances of eight three-pointers made.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"It was a unique game in that both teams sat in a zone defense, so it really had no flow. We took that lead (in the third quarter), but immediately gave up a handful of fastbreak points. Our conversion defense was slow…that was it. The margin for error for us offensively is not very big, so a nine-point lead or a seven-point lead in a game like this, where possessions are going to be minimal…that was a little too difficult to overcome."

NOTES
  • Junior guard Mollie Mounsey eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time in a single game since joining CSU.
  • Mounsey's performance is the fourth individual performance of 20 points or more by a Ram in a single game this season. Sophomore guard Lore Devos accounted for the other three.
  • Mounsey has scored in double figures in four games this season, and led the Rams in scoring in three of those games.
  • Mounsey led the Rams in rebounding in a single game for the third time this season.
  • Freshman guard Lauren Brocke's nine points and three made three-point field goals are respective personal collegiate bests.
