FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State women’s soccer team dropped a close match, 2-1, to Northwestern on Friday afternoon at The Lagoon. All of the goals in the match were scored in an eventful second half of action. Despite the loss, the Rams’ fourth-consecutive, CSU halted its three-match scoreless skid with a goal from freshman Hannah Gerdin.
In the 61st minute, Gerdin gave the Rams a 1-0 lead when she scored her second-career goal with a bending ball that slipped into the right corner past diving Northwestern keeper Lauren Clem. With the goal, Gerdin pushed her team-leading point total to four on the season.
In the 64th minute of action Northwestern knotted the match, 1-1, after a penalty kick by Maria Grygleski found the bottom right of the net. The penalty was awarded after a tackle in the box. Shortly after, in the 77th minute, the Wildcats went on the attack and forced a breakaway. NU’s Kourtney Scott played the ball on the left wing of the box and ripped the ball into the bottom left hand corner past CSU keeper Jesse McGinley.
Colorado State notched nine shots and one corner kick during the match, while the Wildcats recorded 16 total shots and four corner kicks.
IN THEIR WORDS…
“We have to be better defenders, and know where we are (on the field). The penalty woke them up a little bit, and again we weren’t very good defensively today. We are going to try and turn this around and get better.” -- CSU Head Coach Bill Hempen
