LUBBOCK, Texas - In a season that will be full of many firsts for the brand new program, the Colorado State women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 24 Texas Tech 6-0.

The Rams (1-1) faced a lot of pressure early and often from the Red Raiders (2-0), with Texas Tech notching 12 shots, including seven on goal in just the first half.

“They played as hard as they could for as long as they could,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “They finally broke through. We knew going in this was going to be a tough match.”

Texas Tech was able to break through the Rams’ defense in the 20th minute when Caity Heap found herself open just in front of the goal and put away the ball from eight yards out.

Just five minutes later, senior defender Hayley Haagsma found the back of the net on a header from a corner kick to put the Red Raiders in control of the match.

Haagsma would add another goal just two minutes into the second half, before preseason All-American Janine Beckie got in on the scoring action, putting away a ball in the 54th minute.

“Physically we can’t play any faster than we do,” Hempen said. “I tell them the importance of their first touch and making quick decisions, now they saw that first hand. We have some tape of the match and they will get a chance to watch it again and see the quality of play that we are striving for.”

The Red Raiders were relentless with their attack, scoring another two goals to put the total tally to six before all was said and done.

“The environment was hostile and it was a great crowd,” Hempen said. “Hopefully we can take some of the things that they (Texas Tech) do and bring them to Colorado State.”

The Rams return to Texas next week when they take on Southern Methodist in Dallas on Aug. 30. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. MT.

Notes

- For the second consecutive match, co-captains Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn played all 90 minutes. They are the only two players on the team to have played every possible minute this season.

- Head Coach Bill Hempen faced a former player of his in Texas Tech Head Coach Tom Stone. Stone played under Hempen, who was an assistant coach at the time, in 1986 and 1987.

“It’s always hard to play your friends,” Hempen said of the experience. “It’s always hard because your emotions are in check and you know what the other person is going through. It’s a challenge, but a fun challenge.”
