DALLAS, Texas - Playing its third road match of the season, the Colorado State women’s soccer program fell to 1-2 on the year, losing to the Southern Methodist Mustangs (2-1) 4-0 in Dallas, Texas.
The Mustangs jumped on the Rams very early in the match when Taylor Jackson scored in the second minute. Before Colorado State had time to regroup, SMU tacked on another goal in the eighth minute when Kelsey Gorney found the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
SMU added another goal in the 33rd minute to give it a 3-0 lead heading into halftime, in which the Rams were outshot 10-1.
“I probably learned a lesson today myself,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “I need to do a better job of playing to our kids’ strengths.”
The second half featured much of the same statistically, with the Mustangs taking another nine shots in the half, including a goal in the 82nd minute, while limiting CSU to zero goal-scoring opportunities, but Hempen thought that the second half was much more competitive.
“The kids have been very patient with me and we changed some things up at halftime,” Hempen said. “We were much more direct in the second half and I thought we did a lot better.”
The Rams return home next week to play their first home match in program history when they take on Grand Canyon University on Sept. 6. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. MT.
“When you spend the first couple of weeks on the road,” Hempen said. “It’s good to sleep in your own bed and you don’t have to worry about missing classes. I wish we had more home opportunities, but it’s going to be great for our kids and we are just going to have to make the most of those opportunities.”
