Hitting a season-high .347 as a team and behind a season-high nine service aces, the Colorado State volleyball team swept the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Moby Arena 30-22, 30-17, 30-20. With the win, the Rams improve to 11-4 on the year, while Tech falls to 9-9.
Freshman middle blocker Mekana Barnes tied her career-high with a match-leading 12 kills and hit .474 for the match. She also led the team with six blocks. The three seniors on the team, Casey Bauer, Dre Downs and Tess Rogers all recorded nine kills and Rogers had no hitting errors in 20 swings for a .450 hitting efficiency. Freshman setter Ashley Fornstrom recorded a career-high three aces and had two solo blocks and four total on the afternoon. Junior libero Katherine Whitney also led the team with 11 digs.
This afternoon marked the first time this season the Rams did not allow an opponent to have an ace serve and the first time since Nov. 20, 2004 against Idaho. The second point of the first game was a kill for Downs, marking her 1,000th career kill. She becomes the 17th player in school history to pass the one grand mark and is now 16th on the career charts with 1,008 kills.
"To see Tess have a match with no errors is just phenomenal," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "We worked very hard on setting locations and Ashley really did a great job. Mekana and Ashley won the match for us, they were a huge factor. When they connect like that it takes a lot of pressure off our outside hitters. We did serve and pass very well today and that is reflected in our hitting percentage and distribution."
Texas Tech was led by outside hitter Philister Sang with nine kills, but the Rams held her to just a .080 hitting percentage (9-7-25). Libero Desiree Batista led the match with 13 digs and middle blocker Brianna Florus tied for the match lead with six blocks.
Colorado State hits the road for four consecutive Mountain West matches. The Rams play at Air Force Friday, at New Mexico on Saturday, at TCU on Tuesday and then at Wyoming the next Friday (Oct. 28). All four matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local to site.
