CHAPEL HILL, NC — Colorado State volleyball lost its match to No. 19 North Carolina 3-2 on Friday at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill. CSU dropped the first two sets 19-25 and 21-25, then battled back to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-18 before falling 14-16 in a five set thriller.

The Rams got off to a slow start in the first set, only hitting .030 as a team against the Tar Heel defense. Despite the low efficiency, the score remained close thanks to key defense from Karsyn Fetzer and Sophie Stephenson, both totaling four digs each in set one in addition to Kekua Richards' two blocks. CSU dropped set one 21-25.
In the second set, Colorado State built an early 10-6 lead, but North Carolina tied the set at 19 during a six-point run. Colorado State recorded late kills from Jameson and Sofia Zabjek, but North Carolina answered each time and closed the set 25-21. The Rams efficiency increased to .189 in set two, but the Rams found themselves down two sets despite the improvement.
A Sophie Stephenson ace alongside kills from Jameson, Stowell and Eve Wilson pushed the Rams ahead early in the third set with a 66% side out rate, their highest of the match so far as well as hitting a .306 efficiency as a team. While Halle Jameson contributed six kills in the third set alone, a Maria Brun ace sealed the Colorado State set victory 25-21, forcing set four.
Colorado State built an early lead again in the fourth set. Richards continued her double-digit kill night by adding six kills alone in the fourth and leading CSU to a match high .455 set hitting percentage. Adding six blocks from five different Rams, a North Carolina attack error finished the 25-18 set win, forcing a fifth set.
In the final set, Ella Stowell had consecutive kills on her double-digit kill night, and a North Carolina attack error pushed the Rams in front 10-6. North Carolina worked back from a deficit and moved ahead 13-12, but the Rams tied it with an important kill to tie at 13 all. A 3-1 final run sealed the win for the Tar Heels in deuce points, ending the CSU comeback.
Overall, Jameson ended the night with 19 kills at a .167 clip while three other Rams attacked in double-digit kills including Stowell (14), Richards (13) and Eve Wilson (12).
Setter Erin Debiec recorded 50 assists in an east coast homecoming for her, leading the Rams to hit at a .385 team clip by the end of the match.
Defensively, Richards added four block assists while Fetzer dug up 16 balls, leading the team in respective categories.

Up Next: The Rams will take on James Madison in Chapel Hill Saturday at 10 a.m. mountain time to wrap up a three game week and game two on the east coast.
