Canvas Stadium 10 Year Anniversary: More Than a Name, a Partnership

A 10-part series celebrating and revisiting the 10-year anniversary of the state of the art on-campus facility, Canvas Stadium

The first season, the facility remained nameless. On the corner was a sign declaring it as a multi-purpose stadium. It wasn't that Colorado State wasn't short on proposals to name the building, it just hadn't found the right one.

The right fit came with a campus heading in a new direction finding a local financial institution embarking on the same journey. Public Service Credit Union, as part of its rebrand, signed a 15-year deal with the university in becoming Canvas Credit Union, with Canvas Stadium becoming one of the biggest signals.

The deal was announced on June 5, 2018, running until 2033.

Dani Belinski, representing Rams Sports Properties at the time, said the union came together quickly between two likeminded institutions.

"We identified some players we thought would make great partners, and Public Service was one of them," she said. "It happened very fast. The conversations went very well. The new leadership team with Todd (Marksberry, the CEO at Canvas) at the helm was key to getting those relationships and conversations quick and to the point. It organically happened, and the timing was perfect with their rebrand, and they saw the opportunity to get back into a community where they had been really quiet and find a way to engage with who they knew is going to be the No. 1 institution in the state."

It was a monumental deal, and one of the largest in college athletics at the time. Canvas Credit Union claimed the naming rights for $37.7 million, and when combined with a $20 million anonymous donation for the playing surface to be known as Sonny Lubick Field for perpetuity, the final number wasn't far behind a $69 million deal at Southern California and Husky Stadium at the University of Washington ($41 million).

As part of the deal, Canvas Credit Union opened a branch on campus as well as establishing academic programs. Its philanthropic branch has also benefited Colorado State, recently donating $15,000 for No More Under, a swimming clinic for underrepresented families hosted by the CSU women's swimming and diving program.
