CSU claims doubles point in conference tourney
LAS VEGAS – The conference tournament represents a second chance, and Colorado State's women's tennis team was bolstered by the confidence from a victory at the conclusion of the regular season.
Â
Facing a Nevada squad which posted a 4-0 victory early in the Mountain West campaign, the Rams took the courts Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center focused on pulling off an upset in the first round of the Mountain West Championships. Those feelings grew with an early advantage before the Wolf Pack eventually advanced in the draw with a 4-1 victory.
Â
The Rams closed the season with a 7-16 dual record, an improvement of three victories over the season prior.
Â
The Rams took a positive first step by claiming the doubles point with the No. 3 team of Hannah Haber and Diana Lizarazo posting a 6-2 victory, the squad claiming the opening point when All-Mountain West doubles partners Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves broke the Nevada tandem of Marlene Foerster and Silvia Maria Costache to claim a 7-5 decision.
Â
The Wolf Pack rallied when singles play began, first with wins at the bookends of the lineup. They pushed the advantage to 3-1 with a win at No. 2, closing it out at No. 3, all the results coming in straight sets.
Â
Logan Voeks was tied in the third set at No. 5 at 3, while Diana Lizarazo at No. 4 was early in the second set after dropping an opening-set tiebreaker.
