Senior thrower finishes NCAA Indoors in ninth
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Makayla Long made her start in the shot put on Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Nationals finishing ninth and earning Second-Team All-America honors. This was her first time competing at nationals and was one of two Rams who qualified for the prestigious event. Â
Â
Â
Long came out strong with a solid first throw of 17.18-meters/56-feet-4.5 that placed her in the top half of the leaderboard. Her second throw was even better, recording what would be a series best of 17.40/57-1. Â
Â
Â
Long sat in fifth place heading into the final four throws, but a combination of scratches and smaller marks dropped her into the lower half of the leaderboard. Long finished the day in ninth place, just shy of First-Team All-America Honors.Â
Â
Â
The senior thrower came into the day ranked ninth and leaves in the same spot; she now readies for outdoor season in which she competes in the hammer throw and discus toss in addition to the shot put. Â
Looking AheadÂ
The Rams face a quick turnaround as the outdoor season begins next weekend (Mar. 20-21) at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational. The event will be held at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Â
