Rams host Wyoming, NAU over weekend at two sites

FORT COLLINS --  Two days, a pair of venues and a couple of tough competitor will make it a weekend-long test for Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team.

The Rams will host Border War rival Wyoming on Friday at Moby Pool, the meet starting at 3 p.m., with 3-meter diving leading into swimming beginning at 4 p.m. The following day, CSU will move to EPIC to face Northern Arizona, starting at 11:30 a.m. Friday's meet will be the first of the season at the team's true home pool, a place the team feels it carries a true advantage.

"For all the antiquity of it and how it can throw up some restrictions, it also is our home," CSU coach Christopher Woodard said. "It's their day-to-day grind and I think our athletes, they take pride in that. This is where we train. This is how hard we train. So when they have an opportunity to host someone here on campus, I think they want to make it as exciting and engaging as possible."

The Cowgirls are 2-0 on the season, including a dual win over Denver. The two teams have seen each other already at the season-opening Front Range Invite.

With a full slate of campus events on Saturday, the team will mov its meet with NAU to EPIC, where it has already competed twice this season. The Lumberjacks are 1-2 with a loss to Washington State but coming off a win over Idaho.

Woodard is stressing to his team the notion each of them have to be ready all the time, a message which carries more meaning with a roster dealing with a host of ailments in the early run. In the recent loss to Denver, the two teams split wins, but the Pioneers' depth held an advantage.

That has to change for the Rams, particularly against the quality of lineups they will face this weekend.

"I think the lesson hopefully they took from DU is one, every swim does matter. The top end performed admirably against DU and yet we were still several points shy of a win. That speaks to some of our absence of depth," Woodard said. "I think one thing is they need to understand is every athlete has to find someone and beat them. And then secondarily, we have to do a better job of not giving into fatigue. We had some swims where mentally or physically, we didn't feel quite there and lost an opportunity and then we had to rebound. With two days of competition and two tough opponents, there's no room for error. You gotta show up on every single event and if you have a bad event, you gotta shake it off and get up for the next one."

Woodard knows his team won't be at full strength. He also sees it as an opportunity for a handful of individuals to rest the course of their season with a few solid races. He doesn't expect it to come easy, not with the schedule as presented, but it will also prep his squad for what awaits in Iowa with four days of competition and later at conference, a prelim-final set up over the course of four days.
