Rams Escape Boise with a Win

2/8/2025 4:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams fend off fourth-quarter comeback by Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho – If there was ever an example to point to as to why free-throw shooting is so important, it would be Colorado State women's basketball's 67-61 road win over Boise State on Saturday.

A game in which CSU (17-7, 8-3 MW) led comfortably for three quarters quickly turned into a nail-biter as the Broncos (15-10, 5-7 MW) prevented the Rams from making a field goal the entire duration of the fourth quarter. Thanks to impressive fourth-quarter free-throw shooting (14-for-16) from the Mountain West leaders in free-throw percentage, CSU was able to stay out in front of Boise State.

Holding on to a three-point lead with 11 seconds left, Hannah Simental went to the line and cooly knocked down each of her attempts to go up by three. Boise State's Mya Hansen drew a foul on the opposite end of the floor, but made just one attempt which left it a two-possession game. Emma Ronsiek delivered the dagger as she capped a perfect free-throw shooting night (12-for-12) with a final pair to close out the win.

Emma Ronsiek finished with a game-high 24 points while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Kloe Froebe delivered a stellar performance as she scored 16 points – 13 of which came in the first half – while Hannah Ronsiek turned in a nine-point, eight-rebound outing. Colorado State improves to 5-2 in road games this season, doing so against a Boise State team that held an 11-1 home record entering the day.

How It Happened
The first quarter was a rock fight as neither team was able to settle in on the offensive end. The Colorado State defense frustrated Boise State to just 25.0% shooting from the field and forced seven turnovers, which enabled the Rams jump out to a 17-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter began with a 4-0 run by Emma Ronsiek that pushed the lead to 13-points. After the media timeout, the Broncos began to find a rhythm and scored six-straight points to cut the lead down to seven. Looking to get the last shot of the half, the Rams held the ball and fed it to Froebe down low, and the freshman battled to the rim for a layup to beat the buzzer and make it a 33-24 affair at the half.

Colorado State kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter as the 3-ball started to fall. CSU shot 4-for-6 from deep in the period, including a pair from Emma Ronsiek that helped the Rams score 20 points in the period. By holding the Broncos to just 25% from the floor, CSU's lead grew to a comfortable 15 points as the game reached the final 10 minutes.

The tide turned quickly in the fourth quarter when Boise State rattled off seven-straight points to open the frame. Emma Ronsiek knocked down four more free throws to restore a 12-point lead, but another flurry from the Broncos brought it to a one-possession game with under two minutes to play.

Nursing a three-point advantage with under 30 seconds to play, Colorado State forced a missed 3-pointer from Hansen but failed to grab the defensive rebound. After disrupting the Broncos' ensuing put-back attempt, Jadyn Fife corralled the rebound in traffic and went to the other end to shoot a pair at the charity stripe. Fife was calm and collected as she converted her two attempts, giving CSU some cushion and making way for Simental and Emma Ronsiek to ice it.
