GAME NOTES
- Colorado State's defense saw a lot of change over the offseason with 11 starters departing the program via graduation or the transfer portal in addition to a change at defensive coordinator with the return of Tyson Summers. Despite all the fresh faces, CSU found some leadership from within as they named sophomore linebacker and second-year Ram Owen Long as a captain ahead of the season - the youngest captain selection in Norvell's head coaching career. Long has proven the selection to be a good one through two games as he has racked up double-digit tackles in each outing and leading the nation in total tackles per game (13.6). Long was recently named to the watch list for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award, which recognizes exemplary leadership in college football.
- Through five games this season, the Colorado State offense has seen an improvement in a very key area: red zone efficiency. Colorado State scored a touchdown on just 54.5% of red zone trips in 2024, which ranked 104th nationally. This year the Rams have been much more efficient, reaching pay dirt on 69.2% of trips to the red zone which is among the top 45 in the nation.
- Colorado State's passing defense has been solid this season, ranking in the top 55 nationally giving up 201.4 passing yards per game. A large part of that has been credited to the play of cornerback Lemondre Joe, who is tied for the most PBUs in the nation with eight this season. Joe transferred to Fort Collins after four seasons at Missouri State and has developed into the Rams' No. 1 option at corner.
- Colorado State's stable of running backs has been highly efficient this season, with three backs in rotation to keep the legs fresh. Redshirt freshman Jalen Dupree (5.4 ypc), and sophomores Lloyd Avant (6.8) and Justin Marshall (5.2) are all averaging more than five yards per carry, giving the Rams a cerberus in the backfield. Dupree leads the room in volume (69 carries) and logged the first 100-yard game of his career on the road against San Diego State. Dupree leads Colorado State in explosive plays this season with eight, including seven rushes of 15 or more yards.
