RAM TALK
  • The Week That Was: It was a busy week for Colorado State with three games in just six days. The Rams kicked things off with a win over Black Hills State on Monday at Moby Arena before traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Thanksgiving Clasico. CSU got a promising start to the tournament with a come-from-behind win over Kent State, but could not go 2-0 on the Island of Enchantment as it fell to Brown the following day.
  • Gettin' Defensive: Colorado State has been one of the top defenses in the nation this season, stifling opponents to just 32.4% shooting from the floor which is the sixth-best mark in the country. The Rams are limiting opponents to just 55.1 points per game, which is top 40 nationally and the best in the Mountain West. 60 is the limit when it comes to the Green and Gold defensively, as each of their six wins have come when holding their opponents below 60 points.
  • Protect The Rock: The Rams do a lot of good things, but one of their secrets to success is actually something they DON'T do: Turn the ball over. The Rams have led the nation in fewest turnovers per game in each of the last two seasons, coughing it up only 9.1 times per game in 2023-24. Despite the new-look roster, that trait seems to have been passed down to this year's squad as the Rams are giving up an average of just 9.4 turnovers through nine games, which is currently third nationally.
  • Surging Simental: Hannah Simental has been lighting it up in Colorado State's last three games. A transfer from Northern Colorado with a career scoring average of 12.6 and 3-point percentage of 40.1, it took a few games for Simental to adjust to her new surroundings. Things have really clicked in the last three games as the guard is averaging 12.3 points per game on 44.4% shooting from behind the arc. Against Kent State on Nov. 29, Simental surpassed 1,500 points in her career, a testament to her scoring prowess.
  • One of One: Emma Ronsiek has been one of the most well-rounded players in the Mountain West this season with her ability to impact the game in multiple ways. Ronsiek is currently the only player in the league to average at least 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, and leads Colorado State in each of those categories.
  • Sisters Are Serving: Sisters Emma and Hannah Ronsiek have lived up to the hype of their reunion thus far as they have been the Rams' top-two scorers and rebounders this season. Emma is scoring 16.8 points to go with 5.8 boards per game while also leading the team in assists (3.1 per), while Hannah is averaging 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while leading the Rams in steals (1.4).
  • Fab Freshmen: Of Colorado State's five freshmen, Kloe Froebe and Brooke Carlson have made their presence known thus far. The duo combined for 21 of CSU's 25 bench points in the exhibition against Regis, with Froebe ranking second on the team in points (13) and rebounds (7). Froebe has started eight of nine games to begin the season and led the Rams in scoring both at BYU (14 points, Nov. 13) and at home against Columbia College (15 points, Nov. 16). Her performance in those games earned her MW Freshman of the Week honors. Carlson is averaging 5.1points per game in just 12.0 minutes per game, but her aggressive defense has helped her average 1.0 steals per game.

SCOUTING REPORT
  • The Gonzaga Bulldogs: The Bulldogs are coming off a season in which they posted a 32-4 record and made a trip to the Sweet 16. While this year's team is off to a slower start, Gonzaga remains a difficult opponent that has already taken down one Mountain West team this year with an 81-68 win at New Mexico. The 1-2 punch of Yvonne Ejim (18.7 points, 9.6 rebounds) and Allie Turner (13.4 points) will present plenty of challenges for CSU's defense, which has been very effective to start the season.
