FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State will battle Boise State (5-4, 1-0 MW) Sunday in the second game of the early Mountain West conference play with the tip scheduled at 1 p.m. MT. The game is a planned "White Out", encouraging fans to wear all-white to pair with the Rams' traditional white home jerseys.
The game acts as a rubber match with the series deadlocked at 10-all. The series dates back to 1989, but the two teams did not play yearly until 2012. The Rams enjoyed the early success with a six-game win streak when the series picked back up in 2012. However, the Broncos own recent history with a current six-game win streak. The Rams' last win in the series was 2017 in Boise. This marks the only game scheduled this year between the two teams with no trip to Boise.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Ryun Williams
On Boise State…
"They return basically every starter from last season when they ran through the league and also won the tournament. They added a great player from Oregon – a 6-foot-5 post player [Mallory McGuire] that is arguably their best three-point shooter. It's a strange combination, but they have strengths everywhere, so it'll be a challenge. However, we said that last year and we played them into overtime. Our kids will be ready to compete. You are going to want to come out and watch this good basketball game. Be loud and wear white for the whiteout."
Off the Tip
• Last Time Out. The Rams dropped their Mountain West opener at San Diego State, 59-49, It did mark the sixth time that CSU, the MW-leading scoring defense (58.0 ppg), has held an opponent to less than 60 points. Three times this season the Rams have kept its counterpart below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the conference.
• Living and dying from the three-point line. Living and dying from the three-point line are the Rams this season. CSU is third in the Mountain West in 3-point field goal percentage (.371) and 3-point field goals made (73), however have allowed the second-most in the conference (70) for a clip (.333) that ranks sixth in the MW. The Rams are 4-0 when shooting a better percentage in the long-distance game.
• Best Stretch for Liah. Redshirt-junior Liah Davis is in the midst the best eight-game stretch in her career with 80 points for 8.8 ppg. Previously it was 51 points last year with one game as her career-best 21-point mark. This streak has been more spread out with three games of 12 points, including two leading/sharing scoring for the Rams.
• Taking Care of the Rock. Ball control has been a strength for the Rams. CSU has had less turnovers than its opponent in all but one game (UIW), ranking second in the Mountain West in turnover margin (+6.0). Additionally, in each game this season, the Rams have scored more points from the turnovers than its counterpart in every game but one (SDSU). Sharing also has been a positive for the Rams as their assists (116) rank fourth in the MW and their assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) is second.
Scouting Boise State
• Boise State (5-4) travel to Fort Collins for its first Mountain West road game. The Broncos started conference play with an overtime home win against New Mexico on Wednesday. BSU, the two-time defending MW Champions, were tabbed to first in the preseason poll. The Broncos received 25 first-place votes with the next closest team being the Lobos with three. The Broncos have a strong six-woman senior class led by Braydey Hodgins who was voted the Preseason MW Player of the Year.
• Last time out, redshirt junior center Mallory McGwire hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 11 seconds left Wednesday, capping her second-career double-double in which she scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed a career-high-matching 17 rebounds. BSU defeated New Mexico in OT, 83-82, for its fourth-straight MW season-opening win.
• Senior guard Riley Lupfer is a threat from distance. Last game, shit six 3-pointers to bring her career total to 281 and pass Anthony Drmic (2011-16) as Boise State's all-time leader, men's or women's.
• Boise State has won 30 of its last 32 contests against Mountain West teams (regular season and tournament) following Wednesday's win over New Mexico.
A Colorado State Win on Sunday Would Mean…
• Head coach Ryun Williams earns win No. 150 at CSU. First win vs. BSU since February 1, 2017.
• In the series, the Rams halt the Broncos' run at six wins which is tied with the longest streak in the series (CSU: 2012-14).
