Rams’ Murphy-Pauletto, Plentl score in exhibition test at Kansas on Sunday

Rams compete in final tune-up before opening the 2018 season at Denver on Thursday, Aug. 16

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto and senior defender Beth Plentl scored for the Colorado State women's soccer team in a 3-2 result in favor of the hosting Kansas Jayhakws in an exhibition on Sunday from Rock Chalk Park.

Both CSU goals came in the second half, with Plentl's coming on a penalty kick and Murphy-Pauletto's on an opportunity created by a KU turnover. Plentl's penalty kick try was created off an opportunity created on her corner kick service in the 49th minute. The senior sent the ball within the penalty area to Lexi Swenson, who received the ball in front of the far post and fired into the hand of a Kansas defender. Because the handball occurred in the penalty area, CSU was awarded a penalty kick, which Plentl capitalized on for the Rams' goal.

Murphy-Pauletto tallied her goal in the 79th minute. Redshirt sophomore defender Baylee Bedard played the ball down the right side of the field, where the ball was intercepted by the Kansas defense. However, a would-be pass from that defender to the KU goalkeeper instead found the foot of Murphy-Pauletto, who stole the ball on a run up the middle and scored within the 18-yard box.

Colorado State's defense withstood an early attack from Kansas, as the Jayhawks had three corner kick opportunities and an additional set piece just outside the 18-yard box within the first five minutes. CSU allowed just one shot on goal over that span to the Jayhawks, who returned the majority of their top offensive players from last season.

However, Kansas continued the early pressure and registered the match's first goal in the 14th minute. KU's Grace Hagan, the team's leading scorer a season ago, made a run to the corner down the right side and delivered the ball into the top of the goal area. The Jayhawks' Kaycie Young, positioned directly in front of the goal, headed the ball past CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer at point-blank range to break the early scoreless deadlock.

The Jayhawks added a second tally 13 minutes later, with the goal being ruled as an own goal. KU's Hagan was once again involved in the action, as she played the ball into the front of the goal area on a cross. Her volley deflected off a Colorado State defender, and Peifer was unable to turn away the unfortunate bounce as the score moved to 2-0.

After Plentl's tally in the 49th minute, Kansas responded with their third goal two minutes later. A cross into the box was punched back out to Ceri Holland, who shot from about 20 yards out to record the Jayhawks' final goal of the match.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We gained invaluable experience today. No matter what you do in training, it does not completely replicate a very good opponent and very good competition. KU is quite good, and their performance equaled the quality of their facility. We were good enough defensively to stay in the game, and we fought through some adversity, extreme heat and a 120-by-80-yard field to come away witha  respectable preseason result. I enjoyed watching the fight in these Rams."
