FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 1-0, to Utah State at home on Friday afternoon. Colorado State (3-13-2), gave up a goal to Utah State junior forward Jessica Brooksby in the 90th minute of action with just 40 seconds remaining in a match that looked destined for overtime. Utilizing a strong counter attack, Utah State flipped the field quickly and capitalized on a strike from the edge of the box that found its way to the bottom right corner of the goal.

Colorado State goalkeeper Jesse McGinley made an amazing save in the 58th minute to keep the two sides deadlocked in a scoreless battle. With tensions and physicality rising by the minute, Utah State broke free and floated a shot from 25 yards out that took advantage of the wind blowing and headed dangerously for the top of the goal. McGinley was alert on her line, though, and jumped up to acrobatically punch the ball over the crossbar.

McGinley finished with seven saves in Friday’s match, adding to her program record for saves in a season, which now sits at 94. McGinley is also approaching a program high of minutes played by a goalie. She only needs 37 to tie her previous mark set last season.

The Rams had six total shots in the contest and three corner kicks, but couldn’t capitalize on any of the chances. Much of the action in the contest occurred in the midfield, as both teams tried to find a rhythm in the physical match. Utah State was called for 18 fouls, including two yellow cards in the second half.

Colorado State introduced its new soccer fan base, “Cam’s Army,” which marched to the game from the Lory Student Center. Students were armed with green vuvuzelas, a typical soccer noise maker, and drums as they chanted and cheered behind the opponent’s net for the entire 90 minutes.

“It was so cool,” Colorado State Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “We could see them walking over the hill and that was pretty neat. When you get that kind of support it makes a difference, and I hope they come back for our next game.”

IN THEIR WORDS…
“There are some gut wrenching losses, and that’s going to go down on the list. We have lost before in overtime, and that’s hard, but to be battling like that and give one up in that last bit is tough. The girls are trying really hard; we just are not executing in front of the goal and the other team had somebody who found a way through us. It’s not for lack of effort; the team is giving everything they have got every game.” – Head Coach Bill Hempen

STAT OF THE GAME…
• Colorado State had six players a register a shot in the contest Friday. Rams’ seniors Megan Speed and Erick Bratschun registered their shots on target.

NOTES…
• Rams junior goalkeeper Jesse McGinley has upped her tally to 94 saves on the season.
• McGinley is only 37 minutes away from tying a program record for goalie-minutes played.
• Two yellow cards were awarded in the game both to Utah State. In the 78th minute, Utah State’s Jayne Robison was awarded a yellow, and in the 81st minute, Utah State’s Wesley Hamblin was booked.
