FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Head coach Jon Messick announced the 2016 Colorado State tennis schedule on Thursday. The spring slate includes nine home matches, in addition to the 2016 Mountain West Championship tournament.
CSU begins action with four consecutive home matches, beginning Friday, Jan. 22 against Seattle. During the stretch, the Rams also host Grand Canyon (Jan. 23), Colorado State-Pueblo (Feb. 5) and Metro State (Feb. 6).
The Rams leave the state of Colorado the following weekend to face Wichita State and Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., followed by a home match against Colorado College on Feb. 20.
From there, CSU will play at least seven consecutive matches on the road, including against three conference foes – UNLV, New Mexico and Air Force – and in-state rival Colorado. CSU will face Cal State Fullerton and UConn during its spring break, and could possibly add another date that week in California.
The final month of the season will all be played at home, beginning April 12 against Northern Colorado, and followed by three conference matches against Utah State (April 15), Boise State (April 17) and Wyoming (April 23).
The highlight of the schedule, though, is the final week. The 2016 Mountain West Championship will be played in Fort Collins April 28-May 1, and teams from the conference’s 10 other institutions will play just south of campus over the four-day tournament. The last time CSU hosted the conference tournament was 2011, the first year CSU played at the brand-new University Tennis Complex.
CSU’s home contests in January and February will be played indoors at the Fort Collins Country Club. Its April and May matches will be held at the University Tennis Complex.
The Rams closed the fall portion of their season last week at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals in Las, Vegas, Nev. CSU is coming off of one of its best seasons in recent memory, winning eight matches last spring – the most since 2011 – including a victory over No. 54 New Mexico – its first over a ranked opponent in at least 11 years. Messick, now in his 27th season as head coach, returns six of eight letterwinners from that squad.
