FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams (1-2-0) couldn’t overcome an early goal from the Portland State Vikings (2-1-2) on Friday afternoon at The Lagoon, falling to the away side 3-0 on a cold, drizzly day.

Colorado State got off to a shaky start in its match against Portland State, which was compounded with a fourth-minute goal from Maddie Prehoda. The Rams cleared a ball that found Prehoda’s feet just inside midfield. Prehoda one-timed the ball sending it into the box towards a forward. On the slick ground however, the ball took an unexpected bounce over CSU goalkeeper Jesse McGinley’s head and found the back of the net.

The Rams started to settle down later in the first half, connecting passes and maintaining possession to give the defense a rest, but struggled to find any clear opportunities against Portland State’s pressing defense. Junior defender Jessica Stauffer registered the first shot of the game in the 31st minute, but it was handled with ease.

The Vikings out-shot the Rams 5-1 and had three corner kicks compared to just one for the Rams in the first half, taking their 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Beginning the second half, both teams came out looking desperate for a goal; CSU to draw even, and PSU to try and pull away. Colorado State’s best opportunity came in the 58th minute when freshman Maddi Rodriguez and junior Gianna Bertana had some great combination play, leading to Bertana hitting a shot just off the outside of the post.

Just five minutes later though, Portland State got the goal it was looking for. With a free kick from over 40 yards out, Kayla Henningsen played a ball into the box which squirted through without a touch and into the corner of the net. The Vikings would add a third goal in the 79th minute.

Colorado State returns to action on Sunday with a showdown against Iowa at The Lagoon. The match is slated to kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
