LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado State Rams (4-15-0, 2-9-0 MW) concluded their second season ever with a loss on the road at Wyoming (10-8-1, 8-3-0 MW), 4-1.
The Cowgirls, who clinched second place in the Mountain West with the win, got on the board early in just the eighth minute from freshman forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes. On the goal, Lomsnes corralled a rebound and put it back on target. CSU goalkeeper Jesse McGinley got a hand on it, but couldn’t keep it out of the net as the Cowgirls took a quick 1-0 lead.
After the early goal, the Rams settled into the game well and began to string together some passes. Utilizing the attacking efforts of junior Jessica Stauffer and senior Catherine Ruder, the Rams nearly leveled the score twice. In the 11th minute, Ruder blasted a shot from 30 yards out that was deflected away by a full-extension diving save. CSU’s second great opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Stauffer served in a fantastic low ball just inside the six-yard box, but it was just out of the stretch of CSU players running on to it.
However, Wyoming capitalized on CSU’s missed opportunities late in the half to provide the separation it needed in the contest. The Cowgirls added a second goal, this time from Alisha Bass, on a rebounded shot to take a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute. Just four minutes later, Wyoming pushed the score to 3-0 with a goal from Mandy Meyer.
In the second half, the Cowgirls picked up right where they had left off heading into the halftime, and scored a fourth goal in the 48th from Candace Sciberras.
Again, after the early goal the Rams settled in nicely. CSU was rewarded for its efforts in the 78th minute with a goal from sophomore defender Kasey Dietrich, her first goal of the year. On the play, senior defender Catherine Ruder served in a ball on a free kick which bounced around the box before junior defender Megan Speed knocked the ball over to Dietrich who got a foot on it and sneak it past the Wyoming goalkeeper.
The Rams nearly added a second goal a few minutes later with a 40-yard shot from senior defender Jami Vaughn, but her effort was corralled just under the crossbar as the Cowgirls held on to win, 4-1.
