Michael Mooney transitioned from student athlete to volunteer coach in the 2025-26 season before being elevated to Director of Ops and Assistant Coach for the 2026-27 seasons.

In his first year as a coach he helped the Rams achieve a Mountain West Championship in Indoor and Outdoor track. In those Conference Championships the distance crew earned 5 All- Conference honors. They had 2 West Regional qualifiers and 1 qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Before Michaels coaching career he competed for 7 years at CSU due to medical and COVID-19 redshirts. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a minor in Sport Management and a Master's degree in Sports Management. While competing for the Rams he was a 4 time Mountain West All-Conference performer in the 8k cross country, 3000m, Mile, and Distance Medley Relay. He finished his career with 4 top 20 marks in CSU history. He was named Academic All-Mountain West in 2024.

Attended Broomfield H.S. in Broomfield, Colorado. First place, 5a State Colorado Championship 1600 meters and 3200 meters. Second place, Arcadia Invitational 3,200 meters...2017-18 Colorado 5A Player of the Year in soccer...Scored the game-winning goal in the Colorado 5A state men's soccer championship game...Mother Carrie Mooney (Boyd) enjoyed a standout distance career at FSU, including a Metro Conference cross country title, and father Chris Mooney also ran on the cross country and track teams for the Noles...Older sister, Megan, ran her undergrad career at FSU before joining CSU as a grad transfer for the 2020-21 track seasons...Twin sister, Madison, ran at Wisconsin and youngest sister, Mallory, had standout soccer career at Auburn.
