Ram senior qualifies for nationals in shot put
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Colorado State track & field got its first national qualifier of the week as senior Makayla Long punched her ticket to Eugene in the shot put on Thursday.
Â
Long came into the event ranked fifth in the region, but got off to a slow start by scratching her first attempt. The Ram senior delivered on her second, however, with a quality mark of 17.10 meters/56-feet-1.25 that immediately established her position inside the qualifying range. The mark stood tall through the final round of throws as Long earned her way to outdoor nationals after earning All-America second team honors at indoor in the same event.
Â
Also competing in the event was Erin Brown, who threw a 15.18m/49-9.75 and finished 27th in the field. This brought an end to a fantastic season for the former walk-on, who medaled at both the Mountain West indoor and outdoor championships.
Â
In the women's javelin throw, freshman Jet Van Der Heijden put together a valiant effort in attempting to qualify for nationals in her first collegiate season. The Dutchwoman recorded a top mark of 49.07m/161-0 – just two feet short of her career best – which had her in a qualifying spot with just the final heat remaining. As results trickled in, the Ram freshman found herself in 16th, just four spots shy of a trip to Eugene.
Â
Two Rams took the stage in the women's hammer in Kajsa Borrman and Klaire Kovatch. Borrman posted a solid mark of 61.10m/200-5 on her first attempt, putting herself on the outskirts of the qualifying line, but was unable to capitalize on that throw and came up short of the top-12. Borrman and Kovatch each have another chance at qualifying at Saturday's discus competition.
Â
Another pair of Rams competed in he women's 400 hurdles, as conference medalists Neya Jamison and Grace Lanfear looked to earn their way into Saturday's final. Jamison recorded a time of 58.71, while Lanfear ran a 59.82. However, both Rams finished outside the top 24 and came up short of moving on to the next round.
Â
The men of Colorado State will have their final attempts at nationals qualifying on Friday, with the men's discus beginning at 12:00 p.m. MT. Broadcast coverage of the NCAA West Regional is available on ESPN+.
