Huge Third Quarter Fuels Road Win

Rams run away from Albuquerque with important road victory
ALBUQUERQUE — Colorado State once again used a monster third quarter to secure an important conference win against New Mexico, winning 66-46 on the road on Saturday.

The Rams (19-7, 10-5 MW) established a lead early, but the Lobos (17-9, 9-6 MW) stuck around throughout the first half, allowing CSU to take just a four-point lead into halftime. Colorado State flipped the game on its head, however, by opening the third quarter on a 19-0 scoring run in which they held New Mexico scoreless for over seven minutes. The dominant display enabled the Rams to balloon their lead up to 23 points and set up a comfortable fourth quarter.

Colorado State found its groove from behind the 3-point line, knocking down 12 of its 24 looks from deep that was paired with an 18-of-20 performance from the free throw line. The Rams won the rebounding battle 39-31 and produced 17 second-chance points to the Lobos' seven.

Kloe Froebe was a catalyst for CSU, leading the way in scoring (19 points) while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Lexus Bargesser tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Brooke Carlson dished out seven assists to pair with her 12 points. Hannah Ronsiek was the fourth Ram in double-figures, knocking down three triples on her way to 11 points.

The early minutes were marked by missed chances on both ends until New Mexico's Jessie Joaquim broke through with a fast-break layup at 7:53, assisted by Alyssa Hargrove. The Rams quickly responded with Carlson sinking two free throws to even it up at 2-2. New Mexico then went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by Nayli Padilla's layup and free throw at 4:20, giving them a 10-4 lead. But the Rams reclaimed control with a three-pointer from Marta Leimane at 3:31. Froebe's defensive rebound and a clutch three-pointer at the buzzer by Bargesser, assisted by Carlson, pushed the Rams ahead 19-12.

Joana Magalhães answered for the Lobos with a jumper, narrowing it to 25-16. Despite New Mexico's attempts, including Hargrove's three-pointer and Antonio's fast-break layup, the Rams held strong. Bargesser's two free throws at 1:06 stretched the lead to 31-22, though a late push by the Lobos closed it to 31-27 by halftime.
