Back left CSU as all-time leading rusher

One of the most dynamic players to every carry a football in a Colorado State uniform, Lawrence McCutcheon passed away on Friday, his family announced.

A Colorado State Hall of Famer and recently inducted into the Ring of Honor, McCutcheon was a Ram in college and then as a professional. He was drafted in the third round by the Los Angeles Rams in 1972, and after a stellar playing career, remained with the franchise in the front office.

His son, Marcus, shared this message from the family:

"It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Lawrence McCutcheon. Clutch passed away on October 23 with family at his bedside following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Through a decade-long playing career and another 32 years in the Rams' front office, Clutch earned the respect and admiration of teammates, opposing players, colleagues, and fans alike. Clutch will be missed and remembered forever.

We are thankful to those in our community who have reached out with love and support. In lieu of flowers, we ask that those wishing to honor Clutch please donate to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research."

Lawrence's stalwart career at Colorado State lasted from 1969-71, leaving as the school's leading rusher with 2,917 yards, which still ranks seventh all-time. The first Ram to ever rush for 1,000 yards in a season and 200 yards in a game, he was also a threat in the passing game, he still ranks fourth in career receptions for a back (67) and his 486 receiving yards in a season remains the program record.

He would carve a similar path in the NFL, becoming a five-time Pro Bowler and was once that franchise's career rushing leader. He would go on to work for the Rams as a scout and the director of player personnel.

Born in 1950, Lawrence was inducted into the Colorado State Hall of Fame in 1989, adding to his list of collegiate accomplishments, including him winning the Nye Award at CSU and being an honorable mention All-American in 1970. The athletic department added his name to Ring of Honor at Canvas Stadium on Sept. 19.
