Double Dual Brings In Pac Foe

Rams to host Washington State, Colorado Mesa

The first duals of the season not only bring in tough competition, but the first Pac-12 event for Christopher Woodard's team.

Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team hosts Washington State and Colorado Mesa for a double dual on Saturday, with competition beginning at 12 p.m., at EPIC. Diving will only take place between the two Colorado schools in what will be a 16-event format.

Having opened the season at the facility with the Front Range Invitational, Woodard is looking for quickness at the jump and a bit more at the close of races across the board.

"The level of competition that the Cougars bring is a very elite level, and that is not to overlook CMU. CMU is a very, very good program and they have pushed us to the brink," Woodard said. "So I think what we saw in the meet that I liked is we saw pretty good energy. I think we saw some athletes close races pretty well. I think at least what I need to see in the pool is I need to see better exchanges and first 15-meter breaks. I think we've got to get out early in races and we have to have better exchanges already if we expect to be in races.

"Overall, I'm very encouraged by our top line, very encouraged by some of those people who are in the second line or filling in gaps, but I need to see more depth from our program. So it's challenging those second, third, and fourth swimmers and events to really step up."

Swimming at WSU last season, the Rams only won two races in the dual – both backstrokes by Tess Whineray. The Cougars were the conference runner-up this past season, scoring more points in the pool than anybody but losing due to no diving program. The lineup has been bolstered but is still headed by All-American freestyle sprinter Darcy Revitt.

Woodard isn't going to push that reminder, but he hopes to some degree the result isn't forgotten.

"I hope for the returners it is in the back of their mind. It's like, let's get even," he said. "At the same time, what I'm going to preach, especially with six or seven newcomers, is this is just a new opportunity. We've got someone on our home turf coming to us. We're going to swim our best lineup and we're going to produce as much as we can and we're going to let the chips fall where they may."
