Huge Third Quarter Sees Rams Sink Spartans

3/4/2025 10:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams win by 20 after trailing at the half.

SAN JOSE – It was a tale of two halves Tuesday night as Colorado State trailed San Jose State by two points entering halftime but came back to win 90-70 to close out the regular season.

The Spartans (10-21, 3-15 MW) raced out to a lead thanks to 6-for-8 shooting from behind the arc in the first quarter, which helped them carry a two-point lead into halftime. The Rams (22-9, 13-5 MW) put on an offensive clinic in a 32-point third-quarter explosion, dishing out six assists and shooting 55% (11-20) from the field to take a 14-point lead by the end of the quarter. CSU kept its foot on the gas in the fourth, closing out what turned into a dominant victory.

Colorado State was as balanced as it gets on the offensive end as six Rams reached double-figure scoring, the first time CSU has done so since Jan. 22, 2021. Kloe Froebe led the way with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, shooting 8-15 from the field. Hannah Simental (17 points, 3 steals), Brooke Carlson (15 points), Marta Leimane (15 points), Hannah Ronsiek (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Emma Ronsiek (10 points, 7 rebounds) made up the rest of the ensemble of double-digit scorers.

It was far from just an offensive display as the Ram defense forced 16 turnovers and turned those into 23 points. The Green and Gold limited San Jose State to just 28.6% shooting from the floor in the second half, laying the foundation for the comeback.

The win gives Colorado State 22 on the year, the most in a season since 2016-17. It also moves the Rams to 8-2 (.800) on the road, its best road winning percentage since 2015-16.

How It Happened
The hoop was as wide as the ocean for San Jose State in the first quarter as the Spartans shot 6-of-8 from 3-point range in the opening 10 minutes. Colorado State made three of its own from behind the arc, but it was not enough to keep pace with San Jose State as the home side took a 25-18 lead into the second quarter.

The 3-ball remained in effect for the Spartans as they made three more over the course of two minutes to lead 36-28 with 5:31 remaining in the second period. The Rams strung together some stops in response, holding the home team scoreless for over two minutes. Offensively, CSU went down low to Froebe who sparked an 8-2 CSU run over the final minutes of the half, cutting the lead down to two as the game reached halftime.

The Rams emerged from the locker room as a new team, taking full control of both sides of the floor to turn the game on its head. CSU forced a turnover on SJSU's first possession of the half, and on the other end Emma Ronsiek converted it immediately into three points to take the lead. The Rams never looked back from there, finishing the quarter shooting 55% (11-20) from the floor and 50% (3-6) from three while forcing six turnovers on the defensive end to surge ahead 68-54 at the end of the third stanza.

CSU kept its foot on the gas throughout the fourth, allowing SJSU to connect on just one 3-pointer throughout the period. Balanced scoring continued en-route to 22 points in the quarter, putting the game away and closing out the season on a high note.

Up Next
Already having secured a first-round bye, Colorado State will wait for the official announcement of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women's Championship bracket to be announced.
