Caves/Avelar combo produces another win

LAS VEGAS – Being eliminated from the main draw didn't end the weekend for the team, nor did it end the chances for the players to improve.

Colorado State's trio closed out its stay at the Mountain West Fall Individuals tournament on Saturday, with the doubles team of Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves finishing the weekend with an 8-3 victory over New Mexico's Veroux and Malazdra. Freshman Stella Simpson-Morgan hit the courts for a singles match, dropping a three-setter to Vianca Corley of UNM, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.

"I think we gained a lot from this tournament. The stuff we've been practicing, it was fun to see it put into play," Caves said. "The things we've been working on in training, I was able to put that into matches, and it was helping me win points. We're learning to play different ways and be adaptable."

Both Avelar and Caves return home before heading out again for the ITA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah, beginning on Tuesday. They won their draw as a tandem in the first tournament of the season, then rejoined forces again for this tournament.

Whether they stay together or not, the court time they had together will help them down the road or with another partner. Caves said it also helped her as an individual, with assistant coach Scott Langs helping them through their matches, giving her options she had not tried previously.

"Lu and I, the match we lost, the girls were tough, but it was interesting to see us throw up high lobs and have them work. Having Scott there to talk to us, to tell us what to do and apply it in the moment was helpful. I think I have more shot selection now than when I came here."
