Rams Seek to Finish with Consistent Performance

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Finding positives during the season hasn't been difficult for Colorado State football coach Steve Addazio this season. Finding them strung together for long periods of time, however, has been elusive.

Consistency, as he said earlier in the week, has been hard for this team to achieve.

"You are what you are, and we're not there yet," he said.

If anything on Saturday, the Rams would like to put forth their most consistent effort of the season. Not just a good start, not just a strong finish, but a sustained effort from start to finish. It will give them their best chance of capping the season with a win.

There haven't been many games like that for the team this year, and definitely not for some time.

"That would be huge. That would just create the momentum and continue to lay the bricks down for the mansion we're trying to build," quarterback Todd Centeio said. "That would keep propelling us and keep us motivated and create momentum.

"If we could come out here and execute the best we have all season, be more consistent, that would be a win for us."

Centeio believes a strong performance – and hopefully the ultimate goal of victory – would serve the team will long beyond the final horn. With an offseason of work approaching, the boost of a strong performance will improve the mood heading into those long hours behind the scenes.

A six-game losing streak would not dampen the team's resolve to get better, but a win to snap it would be a thrust.

"That's momentum. And confidence. Everything is confidence in the sport of football," he said. "If you're not a confident football player, you're not going to play well. If you're not confident as a team, you're not going to play well. It would continue to build our confidence."

Pass Rush

Saturday is a matchup of defenses which rate as the best in the Mountain West in terms of getting to the quarterback. Colorado State leads the way with 36 sacks (3.27 per), with Nevada a spot back with 34 (3.09 per). The flip side of the stat is Colorado State has allowed just 22 on the season, while Nevada has given up 35.

Still, the challenge for the Rams is to keep quarterback Todd Centeio upright in the pocket to allow him to keep the chains moving against an explosive offense.

"They are a very good defense. We've faced a lot of good defenses. It's not new for us," Addazio said. "I think their nose tackle, Dom Peterson, is one of the better players in the conference. I think he's a strong, disruptive guy, and I mentioned two linebacker who I think are really outstanding."

Peterson has nine tackles for loss, including five sacks. Tristan Nichols leads the Wolf Pack with 9.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. His .86 sacks per game ranks first in the Mountain West.

Colorado State counters with Scott Patchan (8.0), Mohammed Kamara (7.0) and Cam'Ron Carter (6.0).

Here and There

Colorado State will finish the season in their State Pride uniforms. To get the team ready, a group of 10 members of the equipment staff each had 10 helmets to prepare. It included stripping them down, cleaning them and replacing up to 15 new parts – decals, facemasks, back and front bumpers and for some players, visors. The process took each member anywhere from three to six hours to complete. … Voting for all-conference will take place next week, after the regular season is concluded. … The Rams will be looking to win their final home game of the season for the first time since 2017.
