Memorable Moments: Driscoll Record Against Nevada Still Stands

The Rams and Wolf Pack have a relatively short rivalry dating back to the first game on October 19, 1974, at Hughes Stadium. Coach Sark Arslanian was in his second season of rebuilding a dismal Rams football program left in pieces when he took over in 1973. Two very talented pieces of that team left behind by former coach Jerry Wampfler was a quarterback and wide receiver that by 1974 had become the nation's top passing duo.

Mark Driscoll, an all-state quarterback from La Junta, was in his senior year with the Rams and had come a long way since his arrival on the freshman team in 1971. Willie Miller, a former Army green beret who earned a Silver Star and purple heart in Vietnam had become the greatest wide receiver in school history. The two teamed up for amazing aerial assaults on opposing defenses and after three straight losses, the Rams needed an offensive day.

Driscoll and Miller did not disappoint the fans at Hughes Stadium that day, teaming up for three passing touchdowns while Driscoll threw for 305 yards. Miller broke the school's all-time receiving record, and Driscoll set a new mark for season and game touchdowns. Miller had not been Driscoll's only target, he threw for six touchdown passes that day, a feat which still stands in the CSU record books as of 2021.

The Rams rolled over and over the Nevada Wolf Pack, racking up a 31-3 halftime score and finishing the game with a 66-17 win. Driscoll's six touchdowns could have been more, but Arslanian put in Jack Graham to finish out the game. Graham passed for one touchdown himself to senior reserve player Bill Price. Arslanian played his entire team, suiting up 68 players and all of them saw action in the homecoming game.

Although the Rams went on to a 4-6-1 record in 1974, it helped launch their successes for the following seasons and bring in more legendary athletes. The Rams did not play the Wolf Pack again until 1997 when they entered the expanded WAC and then played them consistently afterwards.

Miller went on to an excellent career in the NFL with the Rams and Browns. He was enshrined in the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. Driscoll later became an assistant coach for Arslanian at CSU and then served as the school's director of athletics from 2003 to 2006 and remains on the radio broadcast for Rams football.
