USAFA, Colo. – Two event wins, two top qualifiers, and five personal records highlighted Friday's action for the Colorado State track and field teams in day two of the Air Force Invitational.
Isa Bynum collected his third long jump event win of the season, jumping 24'1'' – just six inches off his personal-best mark. The junior tacked on a personal record of 7.12 in the 60-meter race, representing one of the five total CSU PRs on the day.
Mariano Kis, a true freshman, obtained the most notable PR, extending his best farther by 6'0.25'' in the weight throw for a spot of 59'5.75". The Argentinean native placed second in his second time competing in a jersey after starting the season unattached.
The other event victory came from Ashton Hallsted, albeit unattached, in the weight throw – her fifth win in the event this season in as many tries. The junior transfer from Chadron State recorded a 63'9.75'' – 4'6.25'' ahead of second place and fellow Ram Haley Showalter. However, Showalter's throw was significant as well as she inputted her name in the CSU record book with a toss of 59'3.50'' – good for a share of 16th place.
Sophomores Adam Stark and Lauren Gale earned the two top qualifying times in their respective 400-meter races. Stark clocked a 48.92 for first place, while Elijah Weetman also qualified for Saturday's finals with a time of 50.17. Running unattached, Gale nearly defeated her competition by two seconds.
The other three qualifiers that will be in action another day include Germain Barnes, Will Domier, and Stark in the 200-meter race. Barnes placed second overall in the prelims with a time just .10 off his PR. Lastly, Domier advanced to the finals in the 60-meter race with a time of 7:01.
Saturday's schedule starts off with field events of pole vault, shot put, high jump and triple jump, before the conclusion of the track events in the afternoon.
Coach's Perspective
Head coach Brian Bedard
"I feel a lot better about our performance compared to last week at Colorado. We have some nice highlights and athletes hitting some personal records. In the jumps, Isa [Bynum] and Nia [Powdrell] competed well. I'm most excited about Mariano [Kis] who had a huge PR, showing he will be able to help this team. You put today's results with how the multis did yesterday and we are putting together a great meet."
