Rams Defeat Devilettes, 65-46, in Moby’s 2019 Finale

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – There are expectations for Colorado State women's basketball. Head coach Ryun Williams has built them and laid them out for his team.

The Rams' 65-46 win over Mississippi Valley State at Moby Arena Saturday was good. Most coaches struggle to furl their brow at a double-digit win, especially when it's the 150th of their tenure with a program. Williams knows that each notch helps in the standings. He also knows that the team can play better – and they will play better.

"We have a standard," Williams said. "The energy level at which we want to play, the execution, the intelligence. I think we made a lot of mistakes tonight. We did do some good things – we had some nice stretches where we stretched the lead."

One of them came in the third period. After entering the break with a 12-point lead, the Rams didn't allow a single point until there was only 2:55 left in the stanza. Their defensive efforts resulted in the lead blossoming to 24.

Defense is a part of the expectations laid forth by Williams. His teams will find their rhythm on offense, but keeping opponents from scoring is the key.

"Defense wins games," Myanne Hamm said. "That comes from being concise. You just need to be in the right spot. Zone, we haven't played that much, so I think that means you have to be really focused. Not playing it as much coming in, we did pretty good."

In just her second game back from injury, Hamm did her best to buoy the offense. She poured in a season-high 17 points, including a career-high-tying five 3-pointers. Three other Rams posted double-digit scoring in the win.

Getting Hamm back is part of the reason Williams knows the Rams will improve. The context of the game also mattered. The Rams recently returned from a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee where they squared off with a nationally ranked Lady Volunteers' squad.

Going from an incredible high to a team who was recently beaten by Wyoming by a startling 95-22 mark is difficult. Williams knew the Devilettes would be a much different level of competition, but also voiced a message of focus.

"We just really stressed that this was an important game," Williams said. "It's important that we play well just to keep building as a basketball team. It doesn't matter who you're playing, that's what you want the mindset of your team to be. You're playing against the standard."

The team plays only one game between now and the start of 2020. In total, they'll receive their own Winter Break of sorts before entering conference-only play. In that span, they'll get Tori Williams back, with hopes of getting Lore Devos back, as well. The two will add an even greater punch to a team which has already shown resolve.

"Get healthy, get two really important players back," Williams said of his hopes for the break. "You're only as good as what you put out there, and I think our top seven or eight are really solid.

"That's what we're looking to do. Just get those top kids back in rhythm, back in sync as we hit this conference season."

Next, the Rams travel to Tulsa to face the Hurricanes next Saturday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m. CT.
