Zags score Thursday's only goals in the fifth and 13th minutes
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Two goals for Gonzaga within the first 13 minutes of Thursday's match were the difference as the Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the Bulldogs, 2-0, from the CSU Soccer Field.
Â
Gonzaga (4-2-1) opened the scoring within the match's first five minutes off a corner kick opportunity. The Zags' Samantha Heilman served the ball to just outside the penalty area, where preseason all-conference selection Madeline Gotta gained possession of it. With space, Gotta fired and picked the top-right corner of the net to make the score 1-0.
Â
Just over eight minutes later, Gonzaga scored its second goal as well as what ended up the final tally of the match. Gabriela Maas dribbled into the penalty area, and at the top of the box, dished the ball in between two Colorado State defenders. The ball found the foot of Heilman, who buried it from about nine yards out to extend the Zags' lead to 2-0.
Â
Colorado State (2-3-2) outshot Gonzaga by five (12-7) over the full 90 minutes and by six (8-2) in the second half. Its best chances came about midway through the latter half of the match, with the most notable among those being a penalty kick off the crossbar in the 60th minute. In the run of play, the Rams' top opportunity came in the 67th minute on an Ally Murphy-Pauletto offering from just outside the goal area. Her chance, which was saved by Gonzaga goalkeeper Isabel Jones, came off a rebound from a blocked shot taken by midfielder Samantha Studt.
Â
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We missed a penalty kick early in the second half, and goals really change the mentality of a game. We missed an opportunity to put a little more of a stranglehold in the second half. We were better in that half anyway, but we just didn't put the ball in the net. As always, our team fought. But we're still in search of those goals that'll change things for us."
Â
NOTES
The Colorado State women's soccer team closes nonconference play on Sunday against the SMU Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon MT from CSU Soccer Field.
