Rams paced offensively by 14-point effort from sophomore guard Lore Devos
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A three-point fourth quarter doomed the Colorado State women's basketball team on Tuesday, as the Rams fell to the Bears, 53-47, from Moby Arena.
Â
Colorado State (1-2) led Northern Colorado (2-2), 44-37, after three quarters, but was outscored by the Bears, 16-3, over Tuesday's final 10 minutes. CSU shot 1-for-11 (9.1 percent) in the final quarter, going scoreless for the final 8:02 of regulation after a layup from sophomore guard Lore Devos. The fourth quarter shooting numbers spoiled what was otherwise a solid shooting night for the Rams, who shot .444 (16-for-36) over the first three quarters.
Â
Despite the fourth-quarter scoring drought, Colorado Still outshot Northern Colorado for the game, 36 to 32 percent. Devos shot 6-for-12 from the floor to pace the Rams with 14 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. Junior guard Mollie Mounsey added eight points and played all 40 minutes. Each of freshman guard Lauren Brocke, sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu and senior forward Tatum Neubert tallied six points. Neubert added four blocks to her line.
Â
After a lackluster shooting performance from each team in the first quarter, Colorado State heated up for its best offensive quarter, shooting 72.7 percent (8-for-11) in the second. CSU trailed, 13-10, heading to the second, but got a basket from Lore Devos and four points from Tatum Neubert to take a 16-15 lead by the 7:38 mark. The Rams made seven of their next eight field goal attempts, extending their lead to 34-25 at halftime. The Rams' lead narrowed by only two points at 44-36 after three quarters before the lead changed hands for good with 5:30 to play.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"We held them to 47 points, and that's a really nice job defensively. We battled quite well. Offensively, just a huge struggle for us right now. It's been that way for three games. We've got some kids that can make some plays. We just didn't make very many good offensive plays in that second half."
Â
On the team's offensive struggle:
"You have to have kids make some plays and get aggressive. We had some shots and some free throw opportunities, and we need to be better there in the fourth quarter. Our best offensive players tonight had tough nights. If they have a tough night, we're not going to score. It's that simple for us with our depth and what we have coming off the bench."
