FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- In its first and only tune-up of the 2016-17 season, the Colorado State men's basketball program knocked off the Regis Rangers 75-60 on Tuesday night at Moby Arena. This was CSU's only exhibition game in preparation for the 2016-17 season.
The Rams led the majority of the way, with the exception of a 27-26 Ranger advantage with 3:47 remaining in the first half. Despite Colorado State leading for the rest of the game, the Rangers hung tight throughout, and cut the Ram lead to a single possession with 12:26 to go in the second half. A trio of Clavell free throws paired with an Omogbo layup in the final minutes ultimately closed this one out for the Rams as they left Moby with the victory.
Senior forward Emmanuel Omogbo led the Rams with 16 points on 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, along with nine boards and an assist. Sophomore forward Braden Koelliker, a transfer from Snow College, scored 14 points off the bench, as well as two rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal. In his first game since suffering a season-ending injury in December of last season, senior guard Gian Clavell recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Regis was led by junior forward Dexter Sienko and sophomore forward Ryan Beisty who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Larry Eustachy
(on his impression of the game)
"You know what, I thought it was 50/50 that we would beat that team going into tonight. I saw their whole game against Iowa. We wanted to win the game, find a way to win the game and start setting up on keeping this home court advantage and we knew we'd have our hands full. So I thought it was a great start.
(on how he thinks this team can be moving forward)
"We're a two, and I think we can get to be an eight or nine before the season is over. This is a teachable team. I want to be the best teacher at Colorado State. With that said, we've got world-renowned teachers. But I need the best classroom, or a very receptive classroom to teach these guys. At halftime I was able to go in there and not raise my voice. Just make my points. After the game, just make my points. I just love these guys right now."
Senior forward Gian Clavell
(his overall impressions after the team's first game)
"I am excited for what's coming. The stats say it all. That is how talented this team is. This team doesn't need me as much. We all can play together. I'm just excited for what's coming because this is a great team."
(on if there is a better inside-outside presence than last year)
"This is Nico (Carvacho)'s first game, in college basketball. He played amazing. We are an inside-out team. We have to start inside and then go outside."
Sophomore forward Braden Koelliker
(on how his role in the first game)
"To be honest, I did not know what role I was going to play. Coming in from junior college, you are just trying to get a feel for where you're at for the game. It was nice to see Emmanuel and Nico fulfill their roles and I was able to just piggyback off of that and try to help the team out as much as I can."
(on if he got more comfortable as the game went on)
"Yeah, definitely. When I went out on the floor the first time, I was a little bit nervous. The second half is always so much better. You can come in and finish the game strong. It was easy for me to come off the bench and play the role that I had been given."
Regis head coach Brady Bergeson
Overall thoughts
"I thought it was a really competitive event. They (Colorado State) are really hard to guard and I thought they brought out the best in our guys in their ability to defend, block out, and rebound the glass when they really wanted to go. We were able to creep back in the game when we were doing a good job blocking them out on stops. When they (Colorado State) got on the offensive glass is when they pulled away a little bit."
