FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In-state rival Air Force was no match for the 16-1 Colorado State Rams (6-0 MW) as the Rams won their 13th straight game, the second longest streak in school history, 71-47 at Moby Arena on Wednesday night.
CSU is now 9-0 in the friendly confines of its home arena this year and has now won 24 consecutive regular season home games dating back to last year. With the win, the Rams also became just the second team in school history to start 6-0 in conference play, joining the 1998-99 team that finished 14-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
All 14 Rams saw time on the court as CSU led from start to finish for the seventh time this season. Senior guard Keyora Wharry paced the Rams with a season-high 19 points and was especially crucial in the early stages of the game. The Falcons came out clicking on offense shooting 46.2 percent from the field for 14 points in the first quarter, but Wharry was equally aggressive going 5-of-7 from the field and going to the line seven times for 15 points in the opening quarter. Behind Wharry’s stellar play, the Rams built up a 21-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
That’s when CSU started to flex its defensive muscles that it has built this spectacular campaign upon. Over the second and third quarter, the Rams held the Falcons to just 4-of-19 shooting from the field and 14 points total. Air Force managed just five points in the second quarter and was outscored 27-9 in the third quarter, giving the Rams a comfortable margin heading into the final quarter of play and allowing the reserves to earn some valuable minutes off the bench.
Leading the way for CSU’s bench unit was freshman guard Sofie Tryggedsson, who broke out with a career-high 15 points and five rebounds. Tryggedsson connected on three of her 3-point attempts and made six of her seven free throws. On the night, CSU’s bench outscored Air Force’s 33-7.
IN THEIR WORDS…
Head Coach Ryun Williams
“That was a nice second quarter and a good start to the third quarter; it got us good separation. We did a lot of good things tonight, but we did a lot of things that were not so hot tonight. It’s nice to look at the film for some of those kids who don’t play a lot; we can teach and learn from this game.”
“This can be a really good team. I think this group is a special team if they want to become that. We still have to get better in some areas, but they want to get better; they love to compete. This group can do whatever they want to do.”
Freshman guard Sofie Tryggedsson
“I’ve been low on confidence, but it was great to have this game, and it was great to know that coach trusts me [enough] to put me out there.”
“It’s amazing to be a part of this team because we do some great stuff and we have a lot of fun. Now we’re, what, 16-1? We’ll try to keep it going. Just one game at a time.”
