FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In the final match of the season the Colorado State women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Wyoming Cowgirls. Colorado State (3-15-2, 0-10-1 MW), gave up an early goal putting them in a trailing position for the duration of the contest. In the 90 minutes of action on the pitch, the physicality never let up with 26 fouls and four yellow cards between the two teams.
Wyoming found the back of the net first in the match in the second minute when Kaitlyn Lomsnes shot the ball from the left side of the box, beating CSU goalkeeper Jesse McGinley. Wyoming added to its total in the 25th minute when Alyssa Murray headed in a free kick from Shaina Ashouri.
Colorado State showed its resilience in the second half with multiple close opportunities to find the net. In the 64th minute Rams’ senior Jessica Stauffer had a free kick that was placed 15 yards past midfield. Stauffer booted the ball which almost found the inside of the net, but instead hit off the crossbar and went out for a CSU corner kick.
The Rams finally broke through and go on the scoreboard in the 86th minute when freshman Hannah Gerdin ripped a shot towards Cowgirls’ goalkeeper Enstminger. Entsminger deflected the shot, but senior Gianna Bertana was there waiting to tap it in to push the score to 2-1 with just over four minutes to play. Bertana finished her career at Colorado State as the programs all-time points’ leader with 15 points on six goals. Gerdin finished her freshman campaign with five goals and 12 points, both CSU single-season records.
McGinley set a program record for minutes played by a goalie in a season, after breaking her previous record last season. McGinley played 1,817:36 minutes this season making a program record of 104 saves. During the year, McGinley sat on top of the conference in saves.
After the match Colorado State honored the five seniors Jessica Stauffer, Gianna Bertana, Ericka Bratschun, Jenna Howerton, and Megan Speed. Head Coach Bill Hempen spoke emotionally about the five to the crowd after the match.
